Publisher's Summary

"Caenthell will stay buried, and the North will not rise again until I freely offer my sword to a true descendant of the High Kings, or until one takes it from my dying hands!"

With this curse, the Warlock Malessar destroyed Caenthell. The bloodline of the High Kings disappeared and the kingdom faded into dark legend until even stories of the deed lost their power. But now there is an heir to the North.

Cassia hopes to make her reputation as a storyteller by witnessing a hardened soldier and a heroic princeling defeat Malessar and his foul curse. But neither of her companions are exactly as they appear, and the truth lies deep within stories that have been buried for centuries.

As Cassia learns secrets both soldier and warlock have kept hidden since the fall of Caenthell, she discovers she can no longer merely bear witness. Cassia must become part of the story; she must choose a side and join the battle.

The North will rise again.

Would you listen to The Heir to the North again? Why?

Maybe. It was pretty good a true fantasy story

Who was your favorite character and why?

    I liked Cassia

    Which scene was your favorite?

The fight scene at the end with Baum and Melasser

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It was about 15 hours. I am not sure i could do it in one sitting.

    Any additional comments?

I receive this book from audio boom for an honest review. if you love fantasy then this book is for you. The start was a little slow but once it got started it was WOW. The story is about Cassia, who wants to be a story teller and she gets involved with Baum and Meredith who's mission is to bring back the North and the High King that was destroyed by an evil warlock, named Melasser. But things are not always what they seem. This book has a surprise ending to this adventure. But the adventure is not over. I look forward to reading the next adventure in this tale.

"An excellently detailed book, slow to start..."
If you could sum up The Heir to the North in three words, what would they be?

    Hmmmm..... Excellent Kings Fantasy

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Heir to the North?

The trip to the north, out of many that were very memorable, this one caught my attention the most. It is them on the trail while the old leader is giving back story/history on the scenery which gave the world a sense of a full and complete development.

Which character – as performed by Diana Croft – was your favorite?

This is a tough one..... I would have to say Cassia. She goes through a great arc of character development and progression throughout the journey as she tries to help reestablish the king of the north. She overcomes great diversity and is portrayed in a way that many women are not portrayed in stories about King's.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There were definitely parts that made me laugh out loud and the fact that they have a character that doesn't quite get sarcasm makes for a fun environment of humor in what is a hard journey.

    "Its as advertised."

I received a complimentary book in exchange for my honest review. Honestly I wasn't sure i could get into this story as much as I did. I don't want to give anything away, but lets just say pay attention to the details in the first few chapters as they will have good pay off later. I don't know why it took me so long to get into this story. There is a lot of table setting that I initially didn't have the patience for. Its 15 hours so you definitely cannot enjoy it all in one sitting. Nevertheless I suggest you finish it within a week.

This was one of the more welcoming narrations I heard as of late. Diana really captures the spirit of the fantasy.

The narrator did a fantastic job expressing both characters and emotions.

The story was predictable, but I still enjoyed it. At times it is somewhat slow with subplots, but that's normal for epic fantasy. I was a little annoyed by the sexism, which I felt was unnecessary, but I dealt with it.

"Stories in stories about the past & finding heir"
What did you like best about The Heir to the North? What did you like least?

We come across places that Baum tells of Malessar's magic, but we don't see them in action as he tells they can be. We get the lay of the land here, setting up for what's to come. (feel at 6 hrs, 15 mins) Doesn't feel as there's any high stakes danger, just curiosity from Cassia as they travel. We don't even know the plan Baum has in mind to rise the North again.

I liked the ending, how it all comes together, but I felt most of the story was overly predictable, even the ending. It felt slow too, with the style of stories told and learned. It's not that it's bad, it's just not my pacing.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

These people kept me a bit curious in the book. I had my thoughts about them and wanted to know for sure if I was right.

Meredith comes across odd. There is something different about him. He doesn't know about traps to get food, yet after Cassia tells him about it the next night he bring food in. Though he didn't set traps... How?

Baum is the wise old mind here. He is special, and you get a hint as to why from the prologue. He does believe that the North can rise again, and he's put things into motion over the last few years to make it so. Baum wants a storyteller along to watch and recite what they witness to the world, so the world may know the truth.

Karrak is a character I came to really like. He's learned many things over the years and as we see more of him we see that he cares.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Diana Croft?

This is the first time for me listening to Diana narrate, I would gladly try more of her work. She has an accent that lends to an older feel of the story. It feels to fit the time and characters. Diana does make slight tone and scratchy differences to her voice for the characters, though they are mostly similar in tone. The audio is clean and clear, nothing disrupting when listening.

    Any additional comments?

With Cassia being a daughter of a storyteller it gives the author a way to tell the past to the reader. We get stories of long ago, though those told by the tellers now are not always right. Baum helps clarify those tales and the way of old. We don't see a lot of action in this story. We get more story of the characters and history of the High Kings and Malessar. I know this will all come together somewhere, but it doesn't all fit together perfectly for me yet, at 4 1/2 hours into the story.

I received this audiobook from Audiobook Boom in exchange for my honest review.

If you want details of a place, then this is the book for you. You definitely know where you are. After all that, the story proceeds at a fairly good pace. Cassie wants to be a story teller and she gets her way along as being part of the story.

I can see this turning into an epic fantasy series right up there with the best.

Not bad for a first book. Keep up the good work.

    "Brilliant Story"

The Heir to the North is an epic tale about a girl, Cassia, a storyteller's daughter, who's biggest dream is to become a storyteller herself. A quest isn't what she wanted, but a chance meeting with Baum, a solider, and Lord Meredith, seems to change her mind. As she grows into a woman, she learns to be strong and brave and becomes fierce. The best part is that she doesn't realize how incredible she is. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I can't wait to get into the second one!
The performance by Diana Croft was flawless. She had me mesmerized throughout all of it. I will definitely be rereading this book in the future.

    "Enjoyable start to a series."
What did you love best about The Heir to the North?

    Relatable characters and good world-building.

What does Diana Croft bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Exceptionally good with character voices; narration was crisp and clear throughout.

    Any additional comments?

I received a free copy of this audio book from the author, narrator or rights-holder in exchange for an honest review courtesy of audio book boom.

It's clear this is the jumping-off point for a more substantial series. I thought the plot and world-building were very solid and the pacing was good. It has the feel of a young adult fantasy, but is still enjoyable for other readers. The big plot twist at the end isn't super hard to guess, but that doesn't detract from the quality of the book. Over all, a very enjoyable read.

    "Compelling, but slow"

I sincerely enjoyed this book, but I must admit that it took a bit to get hooked. Though the characters were really quite relatable, the simple fact is that the names of people and places made it hard to follow up front. After listening for a few chapters, I was able to assign names, which made things much easier.
The story itself was compelling and I look forward to the next part of the story. Likewise, the narration was excellent. It really made the characters and story come to life. Thanks for the entertainment.

    "Epic fantasy"
What made the experience of listening to The Heir to the North the most enjoyable?

A very likeable main character thrown into exotic locations and a world brimming with magic, politics, intrigue armies of ghosts. Brilliant!

What other book might you compare The Heir to the North to, and why?

Think of your favourite high fantasy series. Think of the first novel. This is it.

Which character – as performed by Diana Croft – was your favourite?

Cassia, our young heroine, is a great main character and by far my favourite. Although who doesn't like a sarcastic dragon!? We have some great characters in the book but the main character steals the show for me.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There's plenty going for this book and I hate spoilers so lets go for a simple statement. It's great. Cassia's journey with a great cast of interesting characters takes us on a journey. It twists and turns and the end which sets us up for the next instalment was great. Really good!

What did you like most about The Heir to the North?

I loved the traditional storytelling feel to the book

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Cassia, by a long shot.

She's a girl who's had a rough time of it and has spent her life being convinced she won't amount to anything. She's taken it graciously enough but now she's finding her own worth and making her own way in the world.

Have you listened to any of Diana Croft’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I've heard her performance in Ashes by Philip Hemplow, this one has a much wider array of characters and accents which really lets her show off her talents. I was really impressed!

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

'Things are not as they seem'

    "The North will rise again!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! The performance is top notch, with each character's voice distinct and clear as well as full of life. The story is packed with intrigue, mystery, action and more.

What did you like best about this story?

Don't be fooled by the seemingly standard epic fantasy you might think this is. Heir to the North is a surprising and beautifully crafted book that will no doubt stand apart from the crowd if enough people give it the chance it deserves.

There's much to be said about this book. A story about stories. There's a lot being done with the idea of how powerful a story can be, with how they can affect one's outlook on the world, and with how they can twist the choices people make. There's subtlety, depth, and areal sense that the author has spent long and hard crafting each and every tale into this larger tale.

Overall, this is a grand adventure and fully deserving of your attention

What about Diana Croft’s performance did you like?

Diana Croft has so much talent! This is a brilliant performance. Stunning, emotional, and dripping with depth.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wish I could have listened to it in one sitting!
