Editorial reviews

Editors Select, June 2014 - All I knew going into M.R. Carey's The Girl with All the Gifts was that it is a zombie novel centered around a special, enigmatic little girl named Melanie. Now that I've finished, I have a dilemma — I want to convince everyone I know to listen to it, but I don't want to give a single thing away. What I will say is this: The Girl with All the Gifts is one of the most imaginative, original, and deeply human takes on the zombie genre I have ever encountered in any form. It's definitely a thriller in the true sense of the word: every time I thought I knew where the story was going, Carey completely changed the game, and there were plenty of those harrowing, suspenseful scenes that make the genre so irresistible. But what made this story truly unique were the characters — multidimensional, believable, and sympathetic personalities that stayed with me long after the story was over. If you like zombie fiction, or just great, smart thrillers, make this your next listen. And don't dare let anyone spoil the ending for you. Sam, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

In the ruins of civilization, a young girl's kindness and capacity for love will either save humanity - or wipe it out in this USA Today best-selling thriller Joss Whedon calls "heartfelt, remorseless, and painfully human."

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr. Caldwell calls her "our little genius."

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointed at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh.

Zombie book

I didn't realize this would be a book about zombies, but it is. Not what I was expecting, but entertaining none the less.

Well written

The Zombie apocalypse genre is not my cup of tea, but this story is well written with great characters. The narrator did an excellent job.

Great take on the newest obsession in horror!

Easy to listen to, mysterious at first, then a good look at what evolution could look like...and it's not prettier...

The ending!!! (No spoilers)

I love everything zombie and midway thru I wasn't sure if it would win me over. But wow I didn't expect that ending. Characters growing and developing into what you want them to be and into what you wouldn't expect.

My only complaint is the one voice for all the characters especially since the book jumps to different narratives. Otherwise I'm glad I stuck to it.

Good but slow

First off I'll say all the other reviews are right in their own way. The book is meticulously well written. My problem is that the book is slow and plodding, concentrating a little too much on almost irrelevant details. If you like a story that moves along, is exciting edge of the seat stuff and develops the characters well enough to find that you either like them or don't like or identify with them or don't identify with them then this story will be overkill for you. It's also a little misleadingly named. You may get the impression the girl has supernatural or sci-fi gifts but that's not the case. She's just in a unique situation and very smart for her age.

So, overall, slow to the point it bored me at times but surely very well written with an interesting if extremely brief ending. Ties it up nicely in a little bow but doesn't spend much time on it.

Great Intro

The introduction was spectacular but the story seems to grind to a halt near the middle of the book. I started to lose interest but I finished the book. Near the ending it does take off again. I really don't want to say much about what happens or much about the plot to avoid spoilers.
