Publisher's Summary

From authors Pip Ballantine and Tee Morris, the award-winning steampunk series continues.

The chase is on! After rescuing Queen Victoria from the clutches of the Maestro, Agents Eliza D. Braun and Wellington Books are in hot pursuit of Dr. Henry Jekyll. While he continues his experiments on the aristocracy of Europe, he leaves a trail of chaos and despair in his wake. However, when Eliza and Wellington run him to ground in India, they are forced to come face to face with ghosts from the past, and the realities of empire.

Meanwhile, Ministry agents Brandon Hill and Bruce Campbell travel deep into Russia hunting down a rare ingredient to save Queen Victoria's life. Amid the cold they uncover a threat from the revitalized House of Usher that comes directly from their new Chairman.

All in the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences will find their allegiances in question, and their mettle tested as a new dastardly era of international intrigue dawns.

"Story fell short, and narration was annoying."

I have enjoyed the previous stories in this series, but out of the gate, I lost interest because of the change in narration. I'm sorry, but Tee Morris grating voice and his difficulty reading with feeling, with attention to phrasing, ruined the experience. Pip was noticeably better. but neither is a professional narration performer, and it glared.

Looking forward with hope for the previous narrators return,

    "What happened to the narrator?"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

    Probably not

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The interludes were distracting and I would rather that it had focused on the main characters.

What didn’t you like about Tee Morris and Pip Ballantine ’s performance?

It was nothing like the previous books. I thought that Books sounded more American than British and Eliza wasn't much better. That steampunk feel was simply gone. Overall it was just really bad narrating like they were brand new at it (maybe they were) and were working hard to stay in character.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. The narrator(s) were so distracting because they didn't sound the way the characters should that I simply stopped listening because I wasn't paying attention to the story. I thought this was a shame because I've loved all the Ministry of Peculiar Instances books.

"Why do authors think they are voice actors?"
Would you listen to The Ghost Rebellion again? Why?

The story is great and the series is worth listening too. I would listen to this story again if they got a real voice actor to narrate the story.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Quick, someone slap the authors upside the head. While I think they are great writers they are not voice actors. Very few authors are good voice actors. PLEASE, listen carefully to the previous books and then to this one. The difference is clear.

I thrive on science fiction and fantasy. Audio books allow me to catch up on good stories I would otherwise miss.

"A Great Story, But - Narrator Changed! "

I downloaded this book as I absolutely love this series. However, to my surprise, no James Langton as the narrator! Instead, we have Tee and Pip and yeah, I get it, if I wrote something I know I would want to take a crack and being a voice actor / narrator... But, I would do it in the start of a series, not at book 5...etc.

Can I pay more or help fund getting James Langton back?

"Good story hurt by Authors' narration"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

For those who follow the series it's a good story and the next step in the chain but I would recommend reading it rather than listening to it.

What didn’t you like about Tee Morris and Pip Ballantine ’s performance?

I think they don't compare to James Langton's ability to capture the characters. Also the narration part as opposed to the dialogue suffers in comparison as Langton's narration really gave the impression of Victorian pacing and humor. In my opinion the authors read with a more modern cadence that didn't fit with the feeling of the series.

    Any additional comments?

These are great writers who have a great series but I believe they should stick to their strengths and leave the narration to James Langton.

"This is a special performance by the authors"
Would you listen to The Ghost Rebellion again? Why?

This one is narrated by the authors, Pip Ballantine and Tee Morris, and the performance is more exciting, and less stuffy than the previous narrators, even if the reading and pacing isn't quite as professional as those performances.
However - The authors know exactly where the emphasizes should be put, and have an excellent grasp of the humor all over the pages.
I sort of wish I could hear them narrate the others in the series, it'd be much better for roadtrips.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Oh, that's a really difficult question. This story is chock full of excellent characters. Wellington and Eliza are still wonderful, but there are many more tertiary characters that return, and new characters that are added. What amazes me, is that even the villains and villainous/rogue allies get character development and are more than just pasteboard. Few authors bother to flesh out tertiary character motivation.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Because the authors are not professional narrators, the various accents of the British and Indian nationalities are not quite believable, and the switching can be a bit annoying.
The New Zealand accents were great though.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Eliza blindly pushing buttons in one of the contraptions until she ends the fight in a spectacular fashion was awesome.

    Any additional comments?

I was thrilled to meet an active operative of the Ministry who was deaf, and that her competence was assumed by the most unlikely of characters. It's a rare thing to find deaf characters in fiction being treated as normal or competent, unless the piece is written specifically for that segment of the population. I really appreciate the inclusion.

    "Eliza is from New Zealand..."

As much as I enjoyed James Langdon's reading of the earlier books, I'm happy to hear Tee and Pip. If you've listened to the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences podcast, they do all the short stories so when I read the book, I hear their voices in my head. I understand it may be jarring for those who haven't listened to the podcast, but it's like coming home for me. This book was self-published, partially supported by Kickstarter, so that's why the change in narrator.

And for those complaining about Eliza's Australian accent, well, it might be because she's from New Zealand! And so is Pip, so you can't get more authentic than that!

"Wherein our heroes find New Roles"

Book 5 of the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences is another gem from Tee Morris and Pip Ballantine. The Story is full of surprises and gems and insight into not only Books' past, but the growing relationship between our leads. the secondary players all get a time shine. fans of the past books will notice the absence of James Langton , with the authors taking over the duties. while the change is noticeable with each taking a chapter when it changes prespective from Books to Braun
