Publisher's summary

In this sequel to The Lost Gate, best-selling author Orson Scott Card continues his fantastic tale of the mages of Westil, who live in exile on Earth.

Here on Earth, Danny North is still in high school, yet he holds in his heart and mind all the stolen outselves of 13 centuries of gatemages. The Families still want to kill him if they can’t control him - and they can’t control him; he is far too powerful.

On Westil, Wad is now nearly powerless - he lost everything to Danny in their struggle. Even if he can survive the revenge of his enemies, he must still somehow make peace with the Gatemage Daniel North, for when Danny took that power from Loki, he also took responsibility for the Great Gates. And when he comes face-to-face with the mages who call themselves Bel and Ishtoreth, he will understand just why Loki closed the gates all those centuries ago.

Critic reviews

"Card weaves another in a chain of satisfying, teenager-pleasing fantasies…. Card has a grand old time romping around in the fields of comparative religion while letting a feud worthy of the Hatfields and the McCoys unfold, with much tongue-in-cheek humor but a touch of gore, too." (Kirkus Reviews)

"Familiarity with The Lost Gate is useful, but not essential, as Card gives readers enough background to have at least a partial understanding of the world he’s created….Defined characters and a highly imaginative story. For the author’s fans, a must-read." (Booklist)

A bit high school

Really liked the characters, although the hug school bit went a bit long. Had to fight to stay involved. The Author is a good storyteller the

Orson Scott Card has done it again.

I think that my favorite part of any Orson Scott Card audiobook is the afterward read by the author.

Impressive

Well worth the listen for the Afterword alone, where Card offers great insight into his writing process and his theory of world development. Unsurprisingly, those two things stand as the strength of this series: tight writing and an expansive, fully explored magical universe. Enjoy.

Great story base but lacking in character depth

First, I do NOT recommend this book for younger readers due to sexual content.

The story is well founded and the basis well thought out and presented. However, I found the high school friends greatly lacking in depth. The book portrays the teens very stereotypical with an over emphasis on sexualization.

Side Note: In working with high school youth, I find most of them very insightful, their personalities very complex and their perspectives on life and their world worth exploring. We, older folks, can learn so much from the younger generation. We also have a lot to offer the younger generation.

Although the author falls into his "preachie" mode, I found the book a worthwhile read.

Yet another great OSC work. The narration is great and the story is even better. 10 out of 10!

A wonderful sequel to The Lost Gate

I liked The Lost Gate, but did not love it. The Gate Thief satisfied all the qualities I thought the former lacked. Gate Thief was interesting and had very few parts that moved too slowly. In Lost Gate, I found the chapters about Wad boring and sometimes difficult to finish, but this book made their relevance clear. I especially liked the development of Danny in his social relationships, especially who he can and cannot trust.

Until the last chapter of the book, I found Wad's acknowledgment of Danny's superiority in power and character to be promising as an opportunity for development in his character. The last chapter showed me!

The biggest thing that this book had that the first lacked was a definite enemy, rather than a vague notion of families that may or may not kill Danny.

Details about gate magery and man magery were especially fun.

In response to hate

Any additional comments?

In response to people saying , it is ridiculous how many girls throw themselves at Danny north. No girls would throw themselves at guys like that, right? Yes right. But Danny is not just a guy he is a god to these girls a GOD, so think a little more before you throw hate at one of the greatest authors in our current time.

The more I listened to it the less I liked it.

Disappointing
The story did not flow very well, it was like each chapter was written by a different person who only loosely followed what happened in the previous chapters
