Taniel is a powder mage; a flintlock marksman with the ability to imbibe common black powder to strengthen his mind, body, and senses, as well as shoot over long distances. Sent into short-term exile by his father, he's supposed to see some of the world and cool his head, to learn something besides life in the Adran army. His arrival in exile, however, coincides with the eruption of a bloody new conflict as the colony of Fatrasta rises up against its Kez suppressers.
Taniel has certain talents that the Fatrastan militia could very well use, and he just can't help but get involved...

"Good little story - Mediocre narrator"
Story - 4/5
A nice addition to the extensive short story/novella range from Brian McClellan. As usual with the Powder Mage series, it is action packed, and these back stories have really helped me delve further into my favourite character's backstories. This one follows a young Taniel when he still a bit of a rookie, and his first meeting with Ka-Poel. Nice to learn the beginnings of a strong partnership between two of the most intriguing characters in the series. There are no revelations or big discoveries though, but it makes sense to leave these for the main trilogy.
The only problem with it is that it was over too quickly, I think the 2hr shorts/novellas are more enjoyable, as you feel like you are getting more of a story.
Performance - 3/5
I'm not a huge fan of Daniel Dorse to be honest. He is reasonably good at the voice acting, but a bit dreary and quiet on the narration. He takes a bit of getting used to, and 1hr just wasn't enough to do that in this audiobook. Mediocre is probably the best description.
Overall - 3.5/5
