Listen to the Prologue PLUS the first 5 chapters from Steelheart by Brandson Sanderson, free. Order the entire Steelheart audiobook here.
From the number-one New York Times best-selling author of the Mistborn Trilogy, Brandon Sanderson, comes the first book in a new, action-packed thrill ride of a series - Steelheart. Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics.
But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his wills.
Nobody fights the Epics...nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, they spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them.
And David wants in. He wants Steelheart - the Epic who is said to be invincible. The Epic who killed David's father. For years, like the Reckoners, David's been studying, and planning - and he has something they need. Not an object, but an experience.
He's seen Steelheart bleed.
And he wants revenge.

I can find a book to love in any genre -- a beautifully written classic, an interesting mystery or sci-fi, a trashy romance. Bring it!
STORY (sci-fi) - This is a great "teaser" to see if you think you might like to purchase the whole book (which I think won an award like Book of the Year??) The story is set in New Chicago sometime in the future, and there are dudes with super-powers who are controlling humanity. The main character is a teenager who saw his father killed by one of them and is determined to avenge his death by trying to join the only group who seems to be fighting back. Great stuff!
PERFORMANCE - Good job, nothing special.
OVERALL - Can't go wrong by trying this short sampler. It's only about 1 1/2 hours and it's free. I'd recommend this for probably all listeners, at least so far as I've heard.
Suspense, and the ideas of Super People being bad instead of " Superman"! Great idea!
I so excited for the rest!
Rating scale: 5=Loved it, 4=Liked it, 3=Ok, 2=Disappointed, 1=Hated it. I look for well developed characters, compelling stories.
Once the prologue laid the very interesting foundation, subsequent chapters devolved into a YA comic book actioner. The young man relating the story seems too cocky and smart alecky to be the same terrified and traumatized little boy who witnessed the horrific Epics power when his dad was killed. His quest to find and join the Reckoners has the feel of running off to join the circus, and impressing the hot babe seems to be a stronger motivation than dark revenge.
The majority of reviews on Amazon by those who received advanced copies of the upcoming book describe it as a YA selection, in fact marketed that way. As appealing as it may be for younger readers to read about precocious teenagers conquering the evils of the world, I prefer some multidimensional grownups. I have been cautiously dipping into sci-fi of late, a genre that I have little experience with, but I'm willing to try new things. I don't think this one is going to be for me though.

Thank you Audible for the free prologue however the book was too cruel for my tastes. It might have grown on me if I had selected to purchases it.
yes its bring a new modern fantasy to life. love the mix of super power villains and gangster era/future setting.
Its style is new but it flows well id compare it to robert jordans wheel of time series. The main character doesn't just jump in his role and he doesn't just go with his role which is similar to the wheel of time series
he reads well and I would enjoy listening to more of his reads in the future.
Made me think. If such an event happened the results would be likely the same.
Cannot wait to finish this book.
I started audiobooks to get complete caught up on the Game of Thrones story, but I then realized that audiobooks solve my problem of wanting to read but not having the time. Steelheart is a very good story. I had never read or heard of Brandon Sanderson, but he is one of my favorite authors now. Macleod Andrews does a great job as well.
Macleod's performance particularly towards the end of the truck ride. I did not need him to say who was speaking. I had the voices memorized.
The chase scene and whether the main guy would help or hurt the situaion.
It made me laugh with the descriptions of the beautiful women. The environment descriptions are also great.
The only other book from Brandon Sanderson I've read was Elantris, and it was amazing. Compared to that, and maybe some of his other works, this may be too "young" for some adults, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have found lately that a majority of YA books tend to be super predictable, with blatant foreshadowing, and I need to remember to avoid them. This book (so far) hasn't fallen into that category. It seems as though we're going through a super heroes phase (as opposed to vampires/werewolves) as of late, and if you're enjoying it, this is an excellent take that's refreshing and unique. It may be a bit less complex and "adult", but it certainly isn't juvenile.
Audible for President
This was a great offer. I would have never bought this book. The reason for this is that i truly had no clue that i would have any interest in listening to this sci fi/fantasy type of novel. The cool thing is that I LOVED this entire sampler and will buy this book the day it comes out. Another cool thing about this sampler is that it made me search for other books with the whole sci fi type vibe and i came across Jim Butcher and his Harry Dresden series and check this. I am loving it and will be sure to listen to all 14 books in the series!!! Awesome stuff!!!
I think the audio book reads as well as the written version
the plot is unique
the main character is pretty good
Great book for YAs
It's a fun, made for TV story, much like "Legion" (which I was also unimpressed with), but I wish that Sanderson would stop wasting time with these half hearted attempts at screen okays and concentrate on the Stormlight series. I don't understand how he can write something as fresh and amazing as The Way of Kings, and then write this stuff. I mean, if this book was from someone I had never heard of, I would be sort of impressed, but for Brandon Sanderson...? He is capable of so much more.
