The first novel in Robert Jordan's #1 New York Times bestselling epic fantasy series, The Wheel of Time®.

The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

Moiraine Damodred arrives in Emond’s Field on a quest to find the one prophesized to stand against The Dark One, a malicious entity sowing the seeds of chaos and destruction. When a vicious band of half-men, half beasts invade the village seeking their master’s enemy, Moiraine persuades Rand al’Thor and his friends to leave their home and enter a larger unimaginable world filled with dangers waiting in the shadows and in the light.

Highly Recommend

Things to note before beginning:

Look guys if this is your first time through the series and you are expecting 14 books of non stop action you’re going to disappointed as The Last Battle is a few thousand years in the making. With that being said I think it’s easier to digest if you just immerse yourself in each story as it unfolds, try to keep track of as many names as you can and enjoy this epic tale.

Pros:

- build up to epic moments sometimes feels long but those moments are worth it
- when someone is doing something cool/powerful you can feel it
- lots of irons in the fire at any given time
- character growth over the span of books is immense and each character has their own gifts
- world-building is top shelf
- Mat Cauthon
- lore is pretty great
- magic system is unique in the way that it is tied in with the dominant “religion”
- Michael Kramer does an excellent job narrating and while I’m not a huge fan Kate Readings narration is tolerable (more in the cons)
- for as dark a world as Robert built there are a surprising amount of light spots. Mat is particularly funny

Cons:
- obviously if you’re looking for quick resolution seek elsewhere
- there are times when the story can drag a bit but it’s all worth it at the end
- personally I can’t stand Aes Sedai (female channelers). They are super underhanded and manipulative and that just irks me
- you’re going to hear a lot about how men are woolheaded and women are crazy.
- Robert Jordan has a mould for each gender of character and there are few noticeable deviations: Female characters think they can’t be wrong, male characters are too scared of the women
- If I was Rand I would roast Egwene so hard she had to change towns
- I don’t like the way Kate Reading reads Aes Sedai. When she reads for Min and Aviendha I have no issues but all the others she like elongates the vowels (I skip most of the female parts nowadays)
-pronunciations change a little more often than I like which can make it hard to keep track of who/what is around

Now you know how some guy you’ve never feels about a series you may or may not have a started.
But if you’ve read this far down my post you may as well read the rest of the series and see how you feel about it!

Interesting story

I had a hard time getting into it in the beginning. So many characters introduced so quickly, I couldn’t tell them all apart. But it got easier and more interesting as I went along. I wish the narrator could do female voices though. They always sound more like men in drag.

The friendship between the young men.

The narrator did a great job because I never felt lost in the story. The story itself is compelling and the characters stick with you. Robert Jordan has a way to make you feel what the characters feel and care about them.

One of the Greatest Tales Ever Told

The beginning to the Wheel of Time was as enjoyable as it was nail biting. The performances are excellent, the voices just as I imagine them and paint a perfect picture as do the world Robert Jordan creates. Believable, grounded and jaw dropping.

pretty good

I loved the story but it was a bit hard to follow at times. I might re listen to this again because at times I felt the story jumped.

Fun to listen

Easy to get lost in, and leaves you wanting to learn more about each character and the lore surrounding the world that is built in this very descript book
