Ever since its publication in 1965, Frank Herbert's Dune has set the bar high for epic science fiction. In fact, Herbert's beloved novel is considered to be one the best sci-fi books of all time. Dune was the recipient of multiple awards, including the inaugural Nebula Award for best novel in 1966. Listen at 3/4 Speed!!

It’s a treat listening to passages from Dune novels read by the Author. This recording was made in the 1970s. Original run times of those LP/cassette are over four hours. All the content is there on this three hour download but somebody sped it up a bit making Mr. Herbert sound a bit too squeaky. Replay at 3/4 speed solves this but I sure would appreciate Audible engineers going back to ensure the integrity of this recording matches the original. Well worth a download regardless.

How Would You Say That?

The pronunciation of words like Sietch and Muad'Dib. The reader hears the words in each their own head the way they think these words they've never heard spoken should sound. Hearing how the author heard the words when he wrote them. That is the depth of insight this kind of record provides.

Aimless and Convoluted

This audiobook is only for the most avid of Dune fans. It offers random passages from the Dune series read directly by the author Frank Herbert but, since each passage is essentially out of order and devoid of context, you will have to be intimately familiar with Dune, Dune Messiah, and Children of Dune. There is nothing offered here that is not already offered within the texts of the Dune series, so this is mere fan service who feel a compulsion towards completionism in their collection.

A Rare Insight

Here we get to delve a little into the mind of Frank Herbert and his ideas around parts of his opus, Dune. If you were ever curious what the man would sound like reading excerpts of his own work and commenting on it then look no further.

What a disappointment

Would you try another book from Frank Herbert and/or Frank Herbert?

For someone who has read or listened to all but 2 books in the Dune universe, I expected something more than a Reader's Digest introduction to Dune. The only saving grace was hearing Frank Herbert read selected passages - but so what. Very disappointing. The only saving grace is that I bought the book on sale rather than wasting a credit.

the man himself

To hear Herbert speak the words of Dune. To know how those words are pronounced.

I havent tried any other audio books just yet

Which character – as performed by Frank Herbert – was your favorite?

Paul

herbert is the best!

Wish he were still around to make more magic for all of us. I did like him narrating in his own voice.
