Publisher's summary

Bridei is a young nobleman, a fosterling of one of the most powerful druids in the land, Broichan. All of Bridei's earliest memories are of this dark and mysterious man he trusts above all others. Broichan seems to have plans for Bridei, seems to be training him for a special purpose the older man will not divulge.

One bitter Midwinter's Eve, everything changes when Bridei finds a child on their doorstep - a child abandoned by the Fair Folk.

It is the height of ill fortune to have truck with the Fair Folk, and all in the area counsel the babe's death. But Bridei sees an old and precious magic at work and, heedless of the danger, fights to save the child. Broichan is wary but relents, for Bridei must grow to be his own man and make his own decisions.

As Bridei comes to manhood, he watches the shy girl Tuala blossom into a beautiful woman, and feels things he didn't know were possible.

Broichan sees the same process and feels only danger, for Tuala could be a key part in Bridei's future...or could spell his doom.

disappointing

*Disappointing* pretty much says it all. I had such high hopes for this one, and the story did carry me off at first...The setting, the characters, the initial building of the plot promised to deliver a great adventure. I slurped up all the details of the boy's wide education and filed away all the clues about the trials to come, the future in store for him, the state of the world around him, the wonderfull possibilities for the development of Tuala's character. And then I waited. And waited. Nothing came to fruition. By the time I had listened to three quarters of the book I knew there was no hope. The early promise of a great story was definitely not kept, and about half way through it began tapering off into a tedious, unconvincing love story. I have an hour or so to go, but I cannot bring up the will to finish this.

One of my favourite audiobooks

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys following the unfolding of a deeper storyline. The story is fully absorbing, but one caveat is that if you prefer a fast-paced book peppered with exciting battles, this one may not be for you.

What did you like best about this story?

The complex relationships between the characters is what really shines in this book.

Any additional comments?

The Dark Mirror contains some of the most memorable characters that I have encountered among the hundreds of audiobooks that I have consumed, and Michael Page gives a flawless performance.

The Dark Mirror

The story is set beautifully! It weaves and winds around each charater until you fall in love with them. I understand the last reviewer, but we all can not have every book that we read unfold they way WE wish. As for my reviewing friend just listen to that last 1/4...... I know why you were upset... because these charaters are so well created and presented! I am sad that my story is over and here searching for the 2nd addition! :)

The narrator xp

Most characters in the story are young, there are many girls and the narrator sounds like an old man. So wrong xp The most important line in the book is said in such an awful voice, that it destroys everything.

Very enjoyable

I did not find this book slow. I enjoy books that have good character development. I loved Bridae and Tuala's story and was sad to see this book end. I am hoping that audible will get the other stories in this trilogy soon. I will definitely buy them.

Story has interesting parts, but also lagged a bit

Listening to this story, I realized that most of the time I was "listening to a story" and had not "dived into another world." There is a good foundation here, and a good framework with interesting ideas. But, I kept wondering why I wasn't getting involved in the story.

After a while I decided that it was a lack of of both reminder and sensory descriptions. Reminder descriptions are the ones I find useful in a long book or one with many characters and sensory descriptions are great for enhancing the experience. There were some in this book, but not enough to fine tune the mental imagery.

A really good author that enhances the reader's experience with fantastic sensory descriptions is Larry Correia. Dark Mirror was lackluster at points and I had to sometimes back up the audio once I realized I had been thinking about other things while the book was playing. Since this book took so long to get to any points of intersecting plots, some enhanced sensory descriptions would have been great to help hold interest. The book waited until the last hour to pull together some action and meaning to the plot.

The main characters go through a lot of grief and it would have been nice to have some wit or humor interspersed liberally thoughout the story to give some balance.

I've already bought the second of the series due to a Sale, but hope the second book gets better in order to decide to purchase the third book of the trilogy.

Excellent and Enjoyable

This book is one of those that just keeps you griped until the end. Very well researched, filled with detail. You can just imagine you are there in the story watching what the character is doing, seeing and feeling.

The Narrator brings a great story to life.

slow but good

It's a good story but slow. I found myself wishing it were print so I could skim right along and speed things along.
