Michael J. Sullivan garnered critical raves and a massive readership for his Riyria Revelations series. The first book in his highly anticipated Riyria Chronicles series of prequels, The Crown Tower brings together warrior Hadrian Blackwater with thieving assassin Royce Melborn. The two form a less-than-friendly pairing, but the quest before them has a rare prize indeed, and if they can breach the supposedly impregnable walls of the Crown Tower, their names will be legend.

It is so good to hear the familiar voice of Tim Reynolds bring back the beloved characters of Royce, Hadrian and Gwen, et al! If Michael Sullivan really does as he plans and graces us with twelve years of their lives in the form of one novel each, I hope Tim will hang with us as well. Wonderful story full of witty repartee between our two heroes who hate each other at the beginning of this book. As a plus we find out the back story of Gwen's relationship with the two and her beginnings in "the world's oldest profession." Delightful! Keep them coming back, Mr. Sullivan.
The stories are never long enough I just enjoy listening to them. After I finish The Rose, i will re-listen to the "first" three books,
Thank your wife for me, for persuading you to continue!!!!:)
And hast off to Tim on the narration
I love the entire story, the sense of adventure, the characters, the setting ... it was a constant roller coaster, but was well thought out and did a good job of paying attention to the details. This is a 3 book series, and I loved them all. And I liked how the last book ended ... it pulled things together in a way that was satisfying and rewarding.
I don't review too many audio books. I stumbled across Theft of Swords about a year ago. I listened to the trilogy of books and when they were over, I found myself missing them. So I loaded the first book up on my iPod and started again. Four times through the series, I found that The Crown Tower was available.
The writing and narration are terrific. I hope that Mr. Sullivan will keep the series going. You have a lifelong fan.
Thank you very much.
The series is brilliant in every way. Great characters. Funny, exciting and well just very well written. Narration is wonderful.
Royce and Hadrian are fantastic. The perfect opposites that make a great team.
Smooth with perfect pitch to fit the story.
Yes and I didn't want it end.
Just spend that credit...you won't be disappointed!
very enjoyable prequel to a great series! i hope we get all 12 or so years worth of stories that may be coming!!
i am very happy they got Tim Reynolds back for these books, he really gives both of the main characters the voice and presence i get from reading the books.
Having recently finished the preceding trilogy, I was most pleased that Michael Sullivan took on the task of writing prequels starting with the Crown Tower. I had very high expectations for this first in the new series and was not disappointed. The combination of Sullivan's story development and Tim Reynolds narration is unsurpassed. I did find the story pretty dark though it worked well in the context of the complex relationship between the two main characters. I would strongly recommend reading the other series first, the sequence that it was written. There are definitely some pretty violent parts but are not gratuitous or over the top. I highly recommend this series but it is not appropriate for young readers (IMO). I look forward with anticipation to the second in this series.
Time well spent
The developing relationship between Hadrian and Royce and the background to all the other characters. Makes Revelations a much deeper story so I am going to listen to the whole series again.
Audible PLEASE PLEASE hurry and get the 2 other books in this series. It is cruel to only give us just one :)
If I had to write a book... it would be this book. The characters and the story do not disappoint. This book is funny, sad, intense, clever, and over way too quickly!
The only thing that I might suggest is that if you have not read the The Riyria Revelations then start with this book. The Riyria Revelations series is one of my absolute staples to reread when I'm looking to be lost in a good novel. Having read the Crown tower, I feel like the anticipation of knowing what all the characters do and become is gone. Why is it so important that these two men who hate each other start working together? Well that mystery is gone for those who have read the novels that come later.
I was not expecting Gwen to be in this book (not sure why as her and Royce's story start before Revelations). Even though she is an important character in the The Riyria Revelations, I don't really feel like you get to know her, as she flits in and out of the story. She actually was not my favorite in Revelations, however I love her development here and cannot wait for more.
This novel has just the right balance of everything. You will find yourself laughing out loud at the witty banter between Royce and Hadrian and shedding tears for heartbreak in the book. Unlike some novels, the battle scenes are just perfect, not too lengthy in description and gore, but convey the scene and event perfectly.
I cannot wait for more!
