Michael J. Sullivan garnered critical raves and a massive readership for his Riyria Revelations series. The first book in his highly anticipated Riyria Chronicles series of prequels, The Crown Tower brings together warrior Hadrian Blackwater with thieving assassin Royce Melborn. The two form a less-than-friendly pairing, but the quest before them has a rare prize indeed, and if they can breach the supposedly impregnable walls of the Crown Tower, their names will be legend.

If I had to write a book... it would be this book. The characters and the story do not disappoint. This book is funny, sad, intense, clever, and over way too quickly!
The only thing that I might suggest is that if you have not read the The Riyria Revelations then start with this book. The Riyria Revelations series is one of my absolute staples to reread when I'm looking to be lost in a good novel. Having read the Crown tower, I feel like the anticipation of knowing what all the characters do and become is gone. Why is it so important that these two men who hate each other start working together? Well that mystery is gone for those who have read the novels that come later.
I was not expecting Gwen to be in this book (not sure why as her and Royce's story start before Revelations). Even though she is an important character in the The Riyria Revelations, I don't really feel like you get to know her, as she flits in and out of the story. She actually was not my favorite in Revelations, however I love her development here and cannot wait for more.
This novel has just the right balance of everything. You will find yourself laughing out loud at the witty banter between Royce and Hadrian and shedding tears for heartbreak in the book. Unlike some novels, the battle scenes are just perfect, not too lengthy in description and gore, but convey the scene and event perfectly.
I cannot wait for more!
The books they are all great and are well worth your time ,cash or credit. I look forward to more adventures with the Riyria. Very funny and a good story too. Great narration also.
Can Michael J Sullivan tell a story or what. Loved the way he way able to tie in the first three and still was able to set up this book as a stand alone story. Can't wait for the next one.
If you liked the original series and wanted more (I'm in this boat), then this book is for you. The quality of writing and narration is excellent, just as in the originals.
One note: this book is shorter (the original series in audio were two books grouped into one audio book, resulting in a much longer read - this is a single book, about half the length).
Riyeria Chronicles is great addition to the story, or fill in. Tim Reynolds does a great job on the narration.
The author does a nice intro explaining his thoughts and direction to the series. As the author explains you can start with this book if you have not read the previous books in the series.
The book itself is well done and shows that Michael Sullivan still has the juice.
I just wish Audible would complete the Riyeria Revelations series.
Just fantastic!! Soooooo so so fantastic! No words. Esp after just listening to the 3 Revelations series. I ate up every word, it was so great to better understand the back story. Reynolds is the best narrator ever! Don't even think about it, just get this book, but read the 3 Revelations Rirhia, sorry, wrong spelling, but read those first. Wish Michael, or anyone could write this well! I found myself wanting to see the movie, I could easily see what Hadrian and Royce looked like, and all the characters were so excellently done, it just amazes me. If only I could find more books like these. I've already gone through Martin, Sanderson, Jordan, Butcher, & Patrick, etc. I've looked high and low and don't think I'll find any author except those I mentioned can even compare. If anyone knows of one please let me know, thank you.
The audio version definitely brings something new to the table. I already love these books, so it's hard to love it even more, but being able to listen to Royce and Hadrian bicker and snark at each other is a great experience.
I love pretty much everything from when they finally reach the tower to the end of the book. There is just so much action and development that you're on the edge of your seat until the very last word. Plus, those are some of the parts told from Royce's point of view, which is a rare treat.
He is absolutely amazing at male voices! I admit, Gwen's voice rubbed me the wrong way at first, but you get used to it. But man, male voices and dialects, Reynolds just knocks those out of the park.
It was supposed to be one job. The Crown Tower was just the beginning.
I cannot recommend this book enough! It is an amazing adventure and the beginning of one the greatest duos in epic fantasy. It is a nice break from the dark, gritty fantasy that is sweeping shelves right now. You won't regret this one!
Happily married father of 4 with 3 of the meanest Grandchildren in the US :) I am a paving Forman for a large construction company Alabama.
Great books..I really don't care for prequels, but I loved the first ones so much I took a chance. Dang I'm glad i did... It's almost as if M.J.S. Planned it this way. After I finished with the two prequels, I went back and relistened to the first 3, and wow I got so much more out of the whole series.
