Publisher's summary

Tyr is free at last! But for how long?

The city-state of Tyr has been freed from a thousand years of slavery to the sorcerer-king, but with change comes chaos and Tyr's triumph may be its death-knell.

Almost 20 years after Troy Denning first gave readers a taste of the Dark Sun world, it remains one of the most sought-after settings in the Dungeons and Dragons universe.

Rikus the Novel

Unlike the previous book in the series this one follows Rikus completely except for the prologue. The end result is him failing at every turn.

On his own he completely ignores warnings and does not know how to negotiate his way out of a paper bag. Nor does he recognize he is being used on multiple occasions.

The narrator was as good as before.

As far as world building goes this might have been the first Dark Sun novel to explain who the Dragon is.

It feels like this was written to show off the Large battle system TSR made.

Continuing a good introduction

Any additional comments?

A wonderful introduction the world of Athas. All five of Denning's books, read by the talented Ray Porter do a good job of wetting your appetite for the world. Sadly, the other eight books in the older Dark Sun series have yet to be released on Audible. I recommend that fans of the series, old and new, get these audio editions. Hopefully it will encourage WotC and Audible to release the remaining books, and have readers as talented as Mr. Porter.

Tedious

The story of rikus failing his way to victory through no skill of his own. After how much I enjoyed the first novel this one has been disappointing. There’s no achievement, no character growth, no hero’s journey. It’s just one wrong turn after another mixed with a few completely unbelievable coincidences.

Enjoyable....

Nothing brilliant. But this world and series is a fun romp. Always a good narration by Brick.
