There's something strange about David, something that goes beyond the way he makes Ellie feel. He's wealthy, poised, and a complete enigma. With nothing to lose but her heart, Ellie goes in search of the truth - a search that leads her down an eye-opening path that reveals secrets about the world she thought she knew.
The world's order is held in careful balance, the essence of good and evil tilting the scale. When the fabric of reality is stripped away, Ellie is forced to make a decision to follow the path David's constructed before her or simply walk away. The Core is missing and someone must step up and stand between the light and darkness, holding each back and maintaining equilibrium.

Loved the general story and the fact that I liked the main characters (call me simple but it does make it easier to enjoy the book when you enjoy the characters). The narrator did a very good job. She was easy to listen to and nicely and subtly differentiated characters.
Ellie - main character - was great.
It's just the beginning.
Book was a little slow to get to the paranormal bit but worth it. At about the 1/2 way point your learn how there are 5 parts to this and it becomes pretty obvious how the next 4 books will be structured. Checked the titles of the series and sure enough that's it. I'll be getting the next one because it is that good.
I do have a criticism about the narration - I liked the narrator a lot but there are at least 3 instances of repeated phrases. This is very distracting as a listener. Better proofing by the narrator and author was needed.
"An excellent listen, great story."
Yes, I loved the story and it is an easy listen. I cant wait for future books in this series
I think the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost. The stories are not the same but I got the same feeling towards and the same chemistry between the characters.
No it took me 5 days as I listened whilst commuting to and from work.
Kate Thomas is a new author to me but I was completely engaged with her work from the first page. At 60% of the way through I was that addicted that I purchased The Core in audiobook format so that I can listen to it on the way to work once I finished the book. Well I finished yesterday and have left it one day to let my thoughts percolate.
I love the characters, Ellie is intelligent, independent and I find myself envious of her relationship she has with her brother. David, it the strong, mysterious type. I love how at the beginning of the book I am wary of him and by the end I, like Ellie am enraptured.
The plot and its twists are exciting and kept me gripped. It has been a while since I have read a book I thoroughly enjoyed so quickly.
I find the secondary characters, the balance keepers, fascinating, I am looking forward to how they will come into play in the series.
The Core is an excellent read, which has good pace and believable characters and an intriguing ending. I have recommended to my friends.
