Publisher's summary

This novel of awesome beauty and power is a moving saga about people, relationships, and the boundaries of love.

Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read

Through Jean M. Auel’s magnificent storytelling we are taken back to the dawn of modern humans, and with a girl named Ayla we are swept up in the harsh and beautiful Ice Age world they shared with the ones who called themselves The Clan of the Cave Bear. A natural disaster leaves the young girl wandering alone in an unfamiliar and dangerous land until she is found by a woman of the Clan, people very different from her own kind.

To them, blond, blue-eyed Ayla looks peculiar and ugly - she is one of the Others, those who have moved into their ancient homeland; but Iza cannot leave the girl to die and takes her with them. Iza and Creb, the old Mog-ur, grow to love her, and as Ayla learns the ways of the Clan and Iza’s way of healing, most come to accept her. But the brutal and proud youth who is destined to become their next leader sees her differences as a threat to his authority. He develops a deep and abiding hatred for the strange girl of the Others who lives in their midst, and is determined to get his revenge.

Speed of Speaker

The story is great! My own feedback is that the speech sounds rushed. After the first hour, you get used to it though.

Clan of the Cave Bear

I absolutely loved this reading by Sandra Burr....it has been a week of the coldest winter temperatures possible in sunny Florida.....wicked wind and rain and icy temps....but The Clan of the cave Bear and my knitting needles have been a most wonderful combination....for decades I have wanted to read this book....now I am so grateful to have done so!!! A wonderful read!!

Not Your Traditional Protagonist

This was fun! I love history and couldn't quite imagine how a novel of pre-history would be presented. Great reading and narration of a young girl and her acceptance into a tribe. Incredible arc to our sweet hero.

I read this book years ago when I was a teenager. I decided to listen to it on Audible and was immediately hooked again! The narrator was great! The story was as I remembered it and great! Highly recommend!

Always a good read/listen

I first read this book about 25 (or more) years ago. I’ve read it a few times since then. It’s one of my favorite books of all times.
I just listened to the audible version for the first time. I enjoyed it immensely. My only complaint is that the narrators voice was irritating to me. I almost stop listening to it after about an hour but I kept listening. After a while I got used to the narrator’s voice and it didn’t bother me so much.
Great book! A+++

Great story, bad reader

These are great, escapist novels, though not for the prudish! This reader sounds like a robot and reads too fast. However you do get used to her and the story is worth it
