Publisher's summary

Robert A. Heinlein wrote some of the best-selling science-fiction novels of all time, including the beloved classic Stranger in a Strange Land. In The Cat Who Walks through Walls, he created his most compelling character ever: Dr. Richard Ames, ex-military man, sometime writer, and unfortunate victim of mistaken identity.

When a stranger attempting to deliver a cryptic message is shot dead at his dinner table, Ames is thrown headfirst into danger, intrigue, and other dimensions where Lazarus Long still thrives, where Jubal Harshaw lives surrounded by beautiful women, and where a daring plot to rescue the sentient computer called Mike can change the direction of all human history.

"Dialogue as witty as Oscar Wilde's, action as rollicking as Edgar Rice Burroughs', and satire as spicy as Jonathan Swift's." ( New York Times)

I forgot.

I forgot how stupid Heinlein's stories got after Starship Troopers. His whole time series with Lazarus Long seemed to start well then disintegrate into nonsense, as did Stranger In a Strange Land. About that wretched book Heinlein said what must be true of all the books concerning Lazarus Long and his ilk. And iexplained the oddity of Stranger, which also started out in fine Heinlein style until about 530 pages only to abruptly not only radically change style but also descend into nonsense. He had gotten to that point, said he, and had no idea where to go from there. That he chose such silliness and utter tripe for the latter half of that book and all the time hopping Long books was too bad. That people kept buying indicates either hope that Heinlein would get back on track or utter moral decay on the readers'part. I've never figured out which reason. I just know that he should have brought Pixel into this story much sooner and actually given the cat a meaningful part in the story or named the book, How to Get Gullible People To Buy My Books When I've Run Out Of Entertaining Stories To Tell.

I can't fault the narrator on any point though. Tom Weiner did a fine job.

Bizarre

This story is bizarre and doesn't really have an ending. That having been said Tom Weiner makes the journey somewhat worthwhile. Certainly I enjoyed his performance more than the material itself.

Simply Great

What made the experience of listening to The Cat Who Walks through Walls the most enjoyable?

I'm a Heinlein fan. I especially love the Lazarus Long universe. It's best to have read, The Moon is A Harsh Mistress first. but not mandatory.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hazel Stone

Which character – as performed by Tom Weiner – was your favorite?

Can't pick. Even the bad guys are as real as the good guys.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes

Any additional comments?

Good story, well told,

Incomplete end, but worth the listen

I like the Heinlein isms thrown throughout the book, and I did enjoy listening to this book, however, it doesn't have a very good ending to it...a bit anticlimactic, really.

Old man Heinlein does it again &Tom Weiner's cool.

I've come across Robert Heinlein only recently, in the last 5 years... my favorites Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Stranger in a Strange Land, Friday. This story takes a lot from these a more, but uses Heinlein's more current understanding of how weird real world science is, quantum mechanics,etc... and he simply adds it to his palet to paint a tale that will require reading (listening) to it again, at least once or twice. But I really enjoyed the skill of the narrator, who obviously knows and loves the characters he narrates. I'd encourage anyone who liked the Moon, to take this ride too. Heinlein is spinning a yarn from the natural particles of time and space that we really need to grapple with, and like real, he doesn't tie the yarn into a tidy knot, but for me at least a very satisfying end where I can imagine my own next things to play out.

Enjoy!

Too much ass spanking, and few answers.

I was expecting maybe a sequel to "the moon is a harsh mistress" ,which I recommend a lot, but this is not. Altough some of the main characthers of the above mentioned book are back like Manoel Garcia and Hazel Stone, the story-line has nothing to do with the lunar revolution.

The facts and events that take place are confused, some part due to the fact that the book is about time travel, but don't expect that you'll understand why they are after the main character. And while for the most part of the book the plot develops somewhat smoothly, it ends abruptly in the final 2 chapters which are crammed with information. Maybe the writer wanted to be done with the book? Who knows!

Colin Campbell and Hazel Stone are two nymphomaniacs. The two main characters spend more than half the time they are together having sex, talking about sex, talking about having sex with other people, talking about spanking asses and making them turn pink, maybe they could have spend some more time making sense of whats is going on.

At least in my mind the biggest question is how in the seven hells did they come about the time travel machine? This topic is not even mentioned.

Overall this is good listen more because Robert is a great writer and the narrator performance are outstanding.

Short Ending

I find most of Heinlein's novels end rather abruptly. It's like he got bored with the story, and just wanted to end it.
