I love the Hyborian world, but it's not easy to listen to or read much of Howard's work. His constant use of lithe, writhe, and thews, drives me mad. Luckily, these books avoid that. This is definitely his best writing. The second story is so great, virtually another Lord of the Rings. So many memorable characters, so many unexpected plot twists, genuinely inventive storyline and totally impossible to put down. I find reasons to drive long distances in order to get my fix of this audiobook. Like I said in the title, if you own only one Conan audiobook, I can heartily recommend this one!
I dunno. This is classic early fantasy. Love the genre or hate it, Conan is the best of the early stuff. Conan is Conan. Howard was one of the first writers to take up Lord Dunsany's mantle and run with it. Yes it's racist. Yes it's cliched. (Neither endearing but,) It's CONAN. Best to read one of the earlier stories than to start with this triptych, however. This set places Conan in late life after the many adventures in the early stories.
It's not Jordan, but without Howard, Jordan might have been writing in another genre.
These are some of the best Conan stories ever. The narrator does an excellent job.
The story Hour of The Dragon, when Conan takes the ship. Best Conan story EVER!
He really seemed to know the character of Conan and read that character very well.
It made me very happy.
Anyone who claims to like Conan, and only knows the movie or comic version, is really missing out if they don't read the original REH Conan stories.
Howard is the blueprint for all Sword&Sorcery. He is the earth upon which giants stand!
The second Conan book in a collection of Robert E. Howard stories that is as important as the first. People often say that a good writers stand on the shoulders of giants. Howard is the earth on which the giants of High Fantasy and Sword&Sorcery stand. He is the big bang that sparked a whole new genera during his short time on earth.
If your a fan of Fantasy and Weird Fiction then this is one of three essential authors you must read. The other two being H.P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith who were Howard's contemporaries and friends.
I think the narration is very well done on this book. It's all action and sorcery, so don't expect deep characters. However, it is well-written and an interesting listen when you consider this man basically invented the genre that sprawled forth for many decades afterwards and gave us Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, etc.... things like that. The narrator does a perfect job.
A must for fantasy and Conan fans, with some of Robert E Howard more in depth Conan tales, this is great writing beautifully produced.
This book contains some of the most polished Conan stories ever written.. Such a collection of Howard's unadulterated Conan tales has been a long time in coming. For those new to the exploits of Conan this collection is wonderful place to start.
Todd McLaren is equal to the task of conveying the atmosphere of the Hyborian Age with his range of masculine emotions. He has the requisite deep bass and emotive snarl for these characters. His voice for Conan is dead-on perfect.
Long time fans of Conan will especially enjoy three essays by Patrice Louinet that are included at the end of the book. These essays provide an important literary analysis of Howard and his work. Howard is finally getting the credit that fans have long known he deserves.
