Publisher's summary

A human diplomat creates an interstellar incident when he kills an alien diplomat in a most unusual way. To avoid war, Earth's government must find an equally unusual object: A type of sheep ("The Android's Dream"), used in the alien race's coronation ceremony.

To find the sheep, the government turns to Harry Creek, ex-cop, war hero and hacker extraordinaire, who with the help of Brian Javna, a childhood friend turned artificial intelligence, scours the earth looking for the rare creature. And they find it, in the unknowing form of Robin Baker, pet store owner, whose genes contain traces of the sheep DNA. But there are others with plans for the sheep as well: Mercenaries employed by the military. Adherents of a secret religion based on the writings of a 21st century science-fiction author. And alien races, eager to start a revolution on their home world and a war on Earth.

To keep our planet from being enslaved, Harry will have to pull off the greatest diplomatic coup in history, a grand gambit that will take him from the halls of power to the lava-strewn battlefields of alien worlds. There's only one chance to get it right, to save the life of Robin Baker - and to protect the future of humanity.

Critic reviews

"With plenty of alien gore to satisfy fans of military SF and inventive jabs at pretend patriotism and self-serving civil service, Scalzi delivers an effervescent but intelligent romp." ( Publishers Weekly)

A fun and thrilling sci-fi story

Although with a slow start, the book is a fun sci-fi thrilling story, with a mix of political and religious intrigues, and a mission to save the earth... and a sheep.

Will vs Book

Will isn't my favorite voice actor but the characters are worth the listen anyways. Especially the dynamic between Harry and Robin.

A very interesting Sci-Fi tale with great momentum

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this to any of my friends that enjoy Sci-Fi books. It had an interesting premise and kept my attention the entire way through.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Android's Dream?

For me, the plot twist really gave me a spin and I really enjoyed that part.

Have you listened to any of Wil Wheaton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to a couple others and this was the reason I picked this audiobook up. Wil Wheaton paired with John Scalzi is an amazing combination and I think anyone would enjoy them together.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did have quite a few laughs throughout this listen.

Any additional comments?

Great book that I would recommend to anyone.

Best of Scalzi

After hearing several of John Scalzi's books I figured he had to have written at least one stinker. But nope. This turned out to be my favorite! Now leave me alone. I'm going to listen to it again. :)

Popcorn!

If you could sum up The Android's Dream in three words, what would they be?

Old-fashioned fun!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Moc... because he's the only character I've ever known who ate a friend...

What does Wil Wheaton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Nothing... which is just fine with me! I don't like obtrusive readers.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No... but that never happens, so...

Any additional comments?

The title kinda gives it away: This book is not very heavy... It's a good-fun romp, and a fine one!

Intergalactic sheep

Only John Scalzi could write a story around a breed of electric blue sheep and have it be something as phenomenal as The Androids Dream

Very funny!!!!

Would you listen to The Android's Dream again? Why?

The premise was completely new and out of this world.

What about Wil Wheaton’s performance did you like?

His voices are great.

Any additional comments?

The beginning was hilarious! A device grafted in a diplomat's rectum to produce scent insults to an alien race is too funny!
