Publisher's summary

“There is nobody who does [military SF] better than Marko Kloos. His Frontlines series is a worthy successor to such classics as Starship Troopers, The Forever War, and We All Died at Breakaway Station.” - George R. R. Martin

The year is 2108, and the North American Commonwealth is bursting at the seams. For welfare rats like Andrew Grayson, there are only two ways out of the crime-ridden and filthy welfare tenements: You can hope to win the lottery and draw a ticket on a colony ship settling off-world...or you can join the service.

With the colony lottery a pipe dream, Andrew chooses to enlist in the armed forces for a shot at real food, a retirement bonus, and maybe a ticket off Earth. But as he starts a career of supposed privilege, he soon learns that the good food and decent health care come at a steep price...and that the settled galaxy holds far greater dangers than military bureaucrats or the gangs that rule the slums.

The debut novel from Marko Kloos, Terms of Enlistment is an addition to the great military sci-fi tradition of Robert Heinlein, Joe Haldeman, and John Scalzi.

Revised edition: This edition of Terms of Enlistment includes editorial revisions.

Nicely Done

Good well written story. bit of a stretch for separate nations to build huge complex interstellar navies. Still, good story especially with jump in scope in last chapters. look forward to follow on books.

Very well written beginning

This book was very well written, keeps you engaged. Like Daniels once again knocks the voice out of the park.
The problem with the book was the distinct lack of plot. We written and keeps you intrigued, but it definitely feels like a prologue. Some good character development, but no real substance to the story.
Will definitely read the next book now that the world is set up to rock and go to war.

Starship Troopers meets Halo!

Very awesome sci fi book, I had no expectations and no idea really what the book was about going into it, which really is the best way to be pleasantly surprised. Kloos clearly served in the military, way too much detail for a military advisor to supply him with content. I Wikied him and found he served in the German military so that confirmed my assumption and made it clear to me why he had Grayson salute a Marine Corporal, yeah we just don't do that here in the US, but that's ok, its the future after all, things can change. I enjoyed the nostalgia of bootcamp, especially those dreadful yellow footprints :) . Luke does a fantastic job as always, he is good at portraying the slightly cocky self confident characters, Grayson reminded me a lot of Daniel Fitzgerald from The Contractor book by Andrew Ball. Easily likeable and understandable. I'm looking forward to more of the Frontlines books, wish they had an omnibus package so i could get more of them with less credits, hint hint ;)

A Military Sci Fi without Superheroes

This was a fantastic listen. The best thing about this is the reality of the characters without any single character needing to suddenly turn into a superhero. Characters fail or occasionally miss obvious clues but still work hard and prevail. Good story and the narrator has a good and wide variety of voices.

I liked both the book and preformance.

Luke Daniels is one of my favorite narrators. I thought the story is well written and precedes at a decent pace. I am going to now listen to book two and if it is also as good I will be getting book three when it is released later this year...

Luke Daniels saves the day.

Lol, not really saves the day but is on of my favorite narrators on audible. Ok, yes the only reason I bought this book in the first place. Was because of how it was narrated it & there was not a new Iron Druid story yet.

The story wasn't bad at all, just a different story genre than I'm used to reading. So Thank you mr Daniels or I should say Mr Kloos Thank you for getting Luke Daniels to narrate for you.

A great sci-fi book!

The story starts off with the signs of a dystopian future in a corner of North America. It is a somewhat slow start, but it really sets up the main character, Andrew Greyson, well.

The performance by the narrator just hooked me in. Honestly, I don't believe I would have made it past the first chapter if it weren't for Luke Daniel's terrific narration. He does all of the voices perfectly and I cannot give this man enough praise!

All in all, a terrific find! Well worth the listen and the money! I highly recommend it!

loved the first half real gritty

second half started to slow down as it involved the love interest. but the first half really reminded me of the Marine Corps
