Publisher's summary

Can a genetically engineered psychopath grow a conscience, get the girl, and save the galaxy? Two out of three ain't bad.

Rico has a problem. The experimental program that gave him the high intelligence and lightning reflexes he needs as a hit man for a galactic crime syndicate left him incapable of internalizing moral imperatives the rest of us take for granted. It takes real effort for him to pass as a normal human being and he avoids it whenever he can. But he has a job he loves, a fast ship, and plenty of cash. So life is good.

When Rico takes an assignment on a planet where a major political conference seeks to bring more order to the galaxy, he accidentally thwarts a terrorist attack and has to pose as a visiting cop from a faraway world. To complicate matters, he partners with a local female cop and soon realizes he has fallen in love. That shouldn't happen! But not everything is as it seems, and as the story speeds along from one unexpected plot twist to another, Rico discovers the secret of his own identity and faces a terrible choice.

Will Rico live to become fully human? Or will he die just as he grasps what has been missing from his life?

Frank Fleming's exciting debut novel combines action, romance, and moral philosophy in an entertainingly combustible mix.

Excellent ride-along story..!

Wry humor, and subtle insight to a different kind of mind.
Looking forward to the next book!

One of my favorites

This is one of those rare stories I read over and over. The narrator delivers each line in a deadpan way that sets the perfect tone. I guess it's not a comedy but there are parts where I laugh out loud every time I listen. I really cared about and to my horror related to the main character who is a self described "sociopath". I mean his relating to others, not the hit man part. I don't know what the authors personal views on Christianity are but he was accurate in his depiction of what we're at least supposed to be like. It may be the only modern story I've read that did that. Don't be scared off because a Christian liked the book. I'm not a very good one and there's lots of bombs, guns, fights, and spaceships. I listen at least twice every year.

Sequel Wanted!!!

This is a quirky story about one guy's journey when he finally gets around to taking his first vacation. It begins a little strange and one-dimensonal. In a way it's so relatable, that disconnecting from our work persona. However, we soon see he is no typical guy and this is no typical vacation. I love his inner diologue throughout the story. At every turn you'll find surprising adventures and twists. Plus, there are lots of interesting characters along the way. Just don't think you know what is up, because there's one surprise after another. It was a one day listen and I want more from this amazing world!!!

Enjoyed this three times now

Loved this book. It's the only book that I've listened to three times. The author has a great sense of humor and I laughed out loud regularly, which caused me to have to explain myself all the time to people who didn't know what I was laughing at. Couldn't recommend it more enthusiastically.

Hilarious, Fun and Thought-Provoking

I laughed so much, was interested all the way through, and enjoyed the meatier themes. The narrator wasn't great at women, but was otherwise good.

Weird but it’s Frank

Having followed Frank J Fleming for 15 years. I thought sure I will let him have 10 more hours of my life. I can’t wait for the Netflix series.

Fresh, clever, wry, wise, and riveting...

Fast paced, and hard to put down: --to the the extent I (kind of like the protaganist) found myself calculating as to how much I could impose on others (e.g. my family and employer) to keep listening. A cleverly structured plot, wildly sarcastic and wry, but subtly wise; --and intended to leave you thinking. Don't want to spoil it by telling too much, but after buying this because it looked kind of interesting as a $3.95 deal of the day (Thanks Audible!), I was thrilled at finding an out-of-the-blue best-listen that was so fresh, and enjoyable. Well worth a credit, or the member price!

Captivating and enthralling

Finished this book in mere days. A captivating and enthralling journey through the consciousness of Rico. Reccomend it very much.

Fascinating

Where does SuperEgo rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It is one of my favorites. I have listened to it several times.

What was one of the most memorable moments of SuperEgo?

I liked Rico's ongoing explanations about how the rest of the world perceives reality. e.g. "People don't like it when you kill babies". (Just in case you didn't know) I also like the climactic scene where Rico yells at a God he is pretty sure he does not believe in.

What about Joel Richards’s performance did you like?

I liked his cheery tone when Rico is recounting the terrible things he has done.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Rico discovered that he had not been intended to become a hit man and that there were other things that he could have done with his life.

Any additional comments?

I would read another book by this author if it were available. In the midst of all to the craziness there was a lot to think about.
