Succubus Blues: Georgina Kincaid, Book 1

Succubus (n.) An alluring, shape-shifting demon who seduces and pleasures mortal men. Pathetic (adj.) A succubus with great shoes and no social life. See: Georgina Kincaid. When it comes to jobs in hell, being a succubus seems pretty glamorous. A girl can be anything she wants, the wardrobe is killer, and mortal men will do anything just for a touch. Granted, they often pay with their souls, but why get technical? But Seattle succubus Georgina Kincaid's life is far less exotic.

Publisher's Summary

Succubus (n.) An alluring, shape-shifting demon who seduces and pleasures mortal men. Pathetic (adj.) A succubus with great shoes and no social life. See: Georgina Kincaid.

When it comes to jobs in hell, being a succubus seems pretty glamorous. A girl can be anything she wants, the wardrobe is killer, and mortal men will do anything just for a touch. Granted, they often pay with their souls, but why get technical?

But Seattle succubus Georgina Kincaid's life is far less exotic. Her boss is a middle-management demon with a thing for John Cusack movies. Her immortal best friends haven't stopped teasing her about the time she shape-shifted into the Demon Goddess get-up, complete with whip and wings. And she can't have a decent date without sucking away part of the guy's life.

At least there's her day job at a local bookstore--free books; all the white chocolate mochas she can drink; and easy access to best-selling, sexy writer Seth Mortensen, aka "He Whom She Would Give Anything to Touch but Can't".

But dreaming about Seth will have to wait. Something wicked is at work in Seattle's demon underground. And for once, all of her hot charms and drop-dead one-liners won't help because Georgina's about to discover there are some creatures out there that both heaven and hell want to deny.

What the Critics Say

"At the start of a planned series, Mead cooks up an appetizing debut that blends romantic suspense with a fresh twist on the paranormal, accented with eroticism." (Booklist)

"Elisabeth Rodgers’s understated narration displays subtle skill. Her low, even voice traces Georgina’s snarky musings and wistful regrets without melodrama. Rodgers’s vocal choices also support Mead’s secondary characters. Angels mesmerize as they try to convince Georgina to repent. Demonic pals and mortal co-workers emerge with unique voices and endearing concern for the likable Georgina. Mead’s quirky story—the forces of good and evil even gather for Friday night happy hour—is well matched by Rodgers’s intuitive depiction of Georgina’s complexities." (AudioFile)

I'm a 30-something paranormal, mystery, and humor enthusiast. For me, the main character is the most important part of a book.

I liked Georgina. She was a great narrator. Sometimes the back and forth time line was a little confusing, but it wasn't that bad.

    And Roman was SOOOOOO HOT

"Interesting female lead - impossible HEA - no win"

Georgia - succubs/demon can not have a normal relationship because every time she kisses some one, his life gets shorter. She spends a lot of time pushing people who love her away, trying to protect them. She is in a no win situation, which makes her internal strife a little ridiculous/despairing. A dammed soul. The writing was interesting, but with no way out, I don't think I need to continue. This story has multiple boyfriends - Seth, the writer. Roman the bast demon. Doug the coworker. She has sex with her boss to satifsy the succubus hunger. Kind of gross -- the overall downer brings it to a 3. Narrator is good.

I've always been a avid reader so now I'm a avid listener. I prefer the paranormal genre but I do like to switch things up. It's boring if you don't have variety. Of course I do love the romance and the hotter the better. Also, you can't beat a good thriller filled with suspense and a ending you can't even guess at until the very end.

    "Well, this is my problem"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

I did enjoy the storyline and the potential for a fabulous story is here, BUT after this one and upon reading the samples of the other FIVE books in this series it's going to take SIX books for the main characters to get together!!! I loves the succubus story idea, BUT one who fights her nature?? Thats just too sad. OK, I love paranormal with steamy sex, not paranormal with a sexual being who fights her urge for sex, that only occasionally has to give into it and not with the man she is falling in love with. In other ways I did enjoy the writing style of the author. It just isn't my thing. They do start dating in book 2, but she can't kiss him, or she says she can't in this book, so I really don't think I want to waste a credit to see how the author can drag that out for 6 books????

Would you be willing to try another book from Richelle Mead? Why or why not?

Because this story is sooooooo drawn out over six books, probably not. That's due to my reading personality.

    Any additional comments?

It was a love it/hate it relationship book for me. If these books (all six) were on sale cheap then I would buy them and listen to the loooooong story when I had time for this couple to finally get together.

"Angels and Demons and Vampires, Oh My!"

I thought this was a fun listen. The plot was maybe a little bit thin, and the multiple love interests maybe a little much, but still fun. I really liked Elisabeth Rodger's personification of Georgina Kincaid, and I thought the wry bitterness of the heroine as a book-loving succubus that just wants to be loved really came through. Plus, I'm always a sucker for books about book-readers, authors and bookstores.

I'll probably listen to more of this series, and I've been meaning to check out another of Mead's series, Vampire Academy.

    "Nothing Happens"
What disappointed you about Succubus Blues?

The whole story felt really aimless. The mystery wasn't very engaging and I kind of guessed who it was about halfway through. The whole book pretty much just felt like filler. It barely felt like paranormal story to me as pretty much everyone except the angel acted and conducted themselves like humans. Even Georgie felt human- as she only used the shapeshifting when it was convenient (and when she did, it never had anything to do with the plot and everything to do with "I didn't feel like talking to her"). I didn't care for all the different love interests, even the main one. It didn't feel like she really cared for any one of them because she jumped from one to another so easily. Her interactions with everyone felt forced and awkward a lot of the time and the book suffered from having too many characters. The whole thing just felt so thrown together like the author had just written whatever came to her head and didn't plot much out or edit. I found myself bored and walking away from it several times and come back thirty minutes later to find out I hadn't missed anything. In my opinion, don't waste your money or a credit.

Would you ever listen to anything by Richelle Mead again?

No. It's her whole writing style that I don't care for. Everything felt passive and I couldn't seem to get into the characters.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Elisabeth Rodgers?

No, I think she did well. Though the narrators from the Chicagoland series are always wonderful to listen to and I would advocate putting them in any book.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Succubus Blues?

All of the Seth Mortenson scenes, they were boring, and all of the bookstore scenes. So, basically 85% of the book.

"Intriguing story that draws you in and holds you"
What did you love best about Succubus Blues?

The storyline that kept you guessing, pointing you in one direction then revealing it had sent you down a blind alley so to speak. I suspected who the villain was but not until just before it was revealed. Still, there were a few twists at the end I didn't quite see coming, and the ending left me very curious to see what will happen next.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Georgina. She is very personable and easy to relate to. It's easy to feel sorry for her and the life she's landed herself in, her desire to do as little bad as possible. It's difficult to impossible to see her as an evil being for she seems filled with good rather than evil.

Which character – as performed by Elisabeth Rodgers – was your favorite?

Georgina. She really brought her to life and made you sympathize with her, made you feel her regrets and the highs and lows of her emotions.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

A few scenes made me laugh, and a few scenes made my heart break for Georgina, but the main strong reaction was that I was so caught up in the story through the last half that I just had to keep listening, to find out what would happen and how it would all work out.

    Any additional comments?

A great book, and one that I'd definitely recommend to others. I read some of this one on my Kindle to start with, then switched to audio for the sake of being able to keep making progress on it while doing other things, and am very glad I did. It was enjoyable from the beginning in print, but the audio performance really brought the characters to life and drew me in more than I think the print might have done.

    "Fun story, great reader"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. This is a fun, upbeat story with paranormal elements. So it has all the things I love to read. The main character is quirky and fairly unpredictable.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Georgina of course!

Which character – as performed by Elisabeth Rodgers – was your favorite?

All of them. She's an excellent reader.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book made me laugh in several places. It was also poignant in a few places, especially when Georgina's long lost past is revealed.

    Any additional comments?

I'll read the rest of the series. That's the mark of a good book in my opinion! The budding love story is a different twist and promises to cause more havoc in future books.

"I enjoyed this but it is definetly for ADULTS!"

I thought the book was good and I was worried because it did have demons in it and I don't usually care for these types of books. Even though there are demons in the book, they are not the satanic type as in Exorcist type of demons! I will NOT read those so if you are similar then this book is okay and enjoyable for you!
There are a few sex scenes that I would not want my child to read so watch out and do not let your teens read until you have read this first!
Good story line and easy to follow! An enjoyable book overall! I am also excited that the whole series has the same Narrator and she does a great job and makes the book a great visual with her voice!
    I loved meeting Georgina!
    Enjoy!

    "Highly Recommend!"

I have read Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy Series and loved it, but was hesitant to read her Georgina Kincaid series for some reason. However, after starting Succubus Blues, I knew I was hooked. The book was hilarious and fun to read. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and found myself so engaged with the story, that despite the fact I had a strong suspicion I knew where the story was headed, I counldn't stop listening. After finishing the Succubus Blues I immediately read/listened to the other five books in this series and enjoyed each new one more than the last!

    "Great series!"

I stumbled onto this series during a special offer and it blew me away. I wound up listening to the entire 6 volume series in under two weeks. It's sexy, it's funny, and the characters are full of wonderful depth. I only wish I could listen again for the first time.
