Great story! Slow narration.

Any additional comments?

This is one of my favorite books, you have no idea how happy I am to have it in audiobook! Karral's journey from horse boy to secretary to well where he ends up is a journey I love to take over and over.

I was slightly disappointed in the performance however. The narration is slow. Just enough to frustrate me. Thankfully I listen on audible's app and I was able to increase the speed to 1 and 1/2 speed. This makes all but a few sentences sound normal paced. Those sentences usually being an excited quote. Anyway thanks to this feature I was able to listen and love one of my favorite books.

disappointing narration

It was hard to listen to the narrator, who had a cold. Also his character voices were lame, and he even mispronounced key terms in the story...Very disappointing.

Wonderful story brought low by the narrator

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Yes, the narrator. He doesn't have a wide enough range for a book with a large cast.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator is weird choice for this series. He have a lovely deep voice, but this a series with a very young man as the lead. But my biggest problem is he seemed to only have two ways of differentiating characters - either making his already deep voice even deeper and more booming or making his voice whispery sinister. I can get past any pronunciation issues, that sort of thing does not knock me out of the story but it took me well into the 2nd book of the series to get over the voices. A voice that is described in text as a young mans voice should not be preformed as wheezy asthmatic and elderly

I dunno..

What did you love best about Storm Warning?

I actually liked the narrator.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

...what a silly question. This is book 1 of a trilogy that takes place directly after a trilogy that takes place a few years after a trilogy. There are endings?

What does David Ledoux bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I can do the dishes while reading

Any additional comments?

A lot of people complain about this narrator but he's better than the one they got for the last herald Mage trilogy who mispronounced simple English words like bow. I could do without the raspy voice for some characters but otherwise I found him enjoyable to listen to.

Poor Narrator! Great Story

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

This was a book I read years ago when first published. I loved the story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Karal. A young man poised for great things who has normal concerns.

What didn’t you like about David Ledoux’s performance?

He made an exciting book almost boring!

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Absolutely!

Story good but.Speed up your listening speed

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Thought the story line started slow it made sense after you getting further in the plot.I increased the narrator speed and was more comfortable with listening. I will listen again, I also bought book 2 and ,. with the same narrator plan to speed up those also.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Slow Slow Slow

Was Storm Warning worth the listening time?

Once the narrator was speeded up.

Poor reading

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I am just starting this book and am struggling with the reader. HORRIBLE!! I will stick it out since I love the series but will not purchase any more books by the reader. Poor inflection and emphasis on work words. Terrible.

Good story-too "bassy" for me

I think the narrator did a really good job-but I thought his voice was too low on most of his characters. I REALLY didn't like how he portrayed the women in this book. However, I enjoyed being able to work and hear one of my favorite author's books at the same time!! Thanks, Audible!

Read the books in sequence

The first part of this book brings the reader up to date on characters they have met in the "Arrows" series, the "Last Herald Mage" series, and the "Mage Wind" series. While some time is spent filling the reader in on some details, it is written more to jar a memory than to explain the story. So I wouldn't advise jumping into this book as a newbie.

It does move slowly at first, but that is mostly to set up the canvas, and then the excitement and intrigue picks up. Another delightful book from Mercedes Lackey.

If you love Valdemar, give this a try

Any additional comments?

This trilogy is one of my favorite story arcs and Karal is a favorite character. Other reviews of the narrator nearly scared me off and I'm very glad I took a chance on it anyway. I'm from the Midwestern US and we speak a little slower than your average New Yorker, and while I did find him a little slow at first, I quickly adjusted and greatly enjoyed the series. I have returned books before for bad narration but there was never any question that this would be one of those. Now my only wish is that more of the Valdemar stories would be made available in audio!
