Publisher's summary

My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I'm the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I'm the only one there.

With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt. Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters to vampires, while he himself is under suspicion of the crimes.

A very enjoyable yarn with memorable characters

I really enjoyed the story. I did not know what to expect when I purchased this novel, but the story of it was well written and the characters were interesting to me and memorable. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys stories with a supernatural flavor.

great book but audiobook quality is meh

loved it but the quality of the audio needs work. you can hear things like pages turning, the quality changing between takes/different microphones, and sometimes the editing sounds like it cut out necessary pauses between paragraphs or thoughts.

overall the book and performer were still great!

Clever story. Best narrator ever.

This is a fantastic story, and whoever decided James Marsters should narrate it is a genius.

Great series, very enjoyable.

Think of this series as Harry Potter meets Peter parker as a Humphrey Bogart esk detective.

Short, Sweet, and Simple.

To be blunt, Im positive that anyone wanting to get into reading or into books in general will have a blast with this. Its a rather short read and it was very well done.

I expected better

I’ve heard so many good things about the Dresden Files. I was excited to start the series and was thrilled that the narrator was James Marsters. Until I listened to it. The story was okay. I can’t really say I got drawn into it. I didn’t care about Dresden (although Bob was a likable character) or the problems he had. What really shot the story down, however, was Marsters’s narration. Dresden sounded bored. And all of the characters sounded similar. Even during supposedly tense emotional scenes, there was no variation in the tempo or pacing of the dialog. I bought the second book in the series before I finished this one and now I’m kind of regretting that choice. I’m hoping that both the story and the narration improve.
