Publisher's summary

My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I'm the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I'm the only one there.

With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt. Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters to vampires, while he himself is under suspicion of the crimes.

Slow start but ends well

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The pacing of the book, especially at the beginning seems slow, especially the way James Marsters reads it. He sounds a bit bored reading it.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Most interesting was the world Jim Butcher created, mixing a lot of what the reader knows and twisting it about to make it new and interesting. Least interesting aspect was the way Marsters read this first one.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Put a bit more life into the story and characters. It all seemed like he was just reading the words off the page without much interest in the material.

great book, but had noise in the recording

Excellent story and storytelling, but there was some noticeable background noise in the recording.

not for everyone but if it's for you it's great

I really enjoyed this book but I can see alot of people struggling with the pace and style the story is written in... My warning to those coming here has a fan of fantasy keep in mind this is a pulp fiction/private eye style novel... the tropes you'll see here aren't the same you'll see in normal fantasy. I haven't finished the series but I've been told that it only gets better in later novels and I look forward to seeing where the story goes

Fantastic

This is an awesome being for a series. If you have never read/listened to the series I highly recommend it I have enjoyed Jim Butchers books from nearly the being of his career. The series just gets better book after book. The world building and character development are top notch

wonderful but breathy

the story was wonderfully put together and never released my interest however the narrator, while his voice is perfect for the role, breathed very heavily and seemed to smack his lips at the end of every sentence. 8.5/10

Solid book

It's not rewriting the genre, but if you like a unique spin on a tried and true story, you'd be hard pressed to find something better.

My First Dresden Novel

Yessss! Another series to savor. Lots of action. James Marsters’ narration was perfect for this character. Story pace was just right. MC is mysterious, quirky, and decent. Story is set in a modern urban world which makes it easy to walk side by side with him. I am looking forward to the next slice of this world.
