Publisher's summary

My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I'm the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I'm the only one there.

With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt. Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters to vampires, while he himself is under suspicion of the crimes.

Great first book!

I grew up listening to old Louis Lamour detective stories and the Dresden files is very reminiscent of that. The story is compelling and weaves very well. overall I really enjoyed the book and would very much recommend it.

Time passes in a flowing way.

Cleaning while listening to Marster's telling made time pass quite quickly. Always would highly recommend!

a grand start a glorious tail

I enjoy the first book of the dressing files setting up our happiest wizard Harry for all the trials that he's going to have to face as you grows in his power.

Pretty good story, look forward to the series

I enjoyed the story and I’m looking forward to the rest of the series. I wasn’t too impressed with James Marsters narration. His voice is perfect for Harry but it is really hard for me to get past his breathing..... sorry if you didn’t notice until I mentioned it but it is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. He doesn’t do it constantly which is good but enough for me to notice and now I hear it every time he takes a deep breath or exhales. Frustrating....

Great books, decent narrator.

The books are great, and the narrator does justice to a wizardly private investigator theme. However, he's not so great at voices or any sort of character dialogue. I could just be spoiled by Stephen Fry, Tim Gerard Reynolds, Michael Kramer, and Kate Reading, but James Marsters leaves something wanting in the acting department.

That's not to say he has a bad voice. In fact, I think his voice is makes for a darn good Dresden, and I hope he gets rolling as the books go on. I just feel that he gets apprehensive and nervous sometimes, which tends to make him narrate fast, robotic, and he's sometimes just too quiet. When he's just narrating Dresden's point of view, he's great. I'm looking forward to seeing how he evolves.

Bad audio

I get that this book was recorded awhile ago so i know the audio quality isn't as great as books being recorded now. But being able to hear the narrator breath in air and swallowing really took me out of the story. I just keep focusing on it making me cringe just hoping the story would end because of it.
