Publisher's summary

My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I'm the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I'm the only one there.

With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt. Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters to vampires, while he himself is under suspicion of the crimes.

detective noir meets supernatural

Hard to not love an anti-hero. Harry Dresden always does the right thing even when it means breaking the law, losing a friend or losing his life. Lays a strong character foundation, I had to listen to every single book following the series to it's end. Savor them!!

Good Story...Amazing Performance!

The story is dark and grisly but we'll written. With that in mind, the darkness was written in such a way as to not be to in your face.

As for the performance, James Marsters nailed it! I read that the audio was off and was slightly worried. But Marsters let the breaths that were picked up add to the story and his creation of his characters. The audio was slightly off and required that I turn it up and down a few times but not in any way that took away from the overall enjoyment.

Excellent book!

The start of a truly excellent series

It is one of the better fantasy series I have ever read.
James the narrator is a bit rough around the edges at first and this book but he gets better, and to be honest he might be one of the best narrators I have ever listened to.

The story is relatively short, but the rest of the books in the series get much longer and better.

Great story and performance; audio is messy

This is clearly and older recording with some weird transitions and inconsistent sound quality, but it didn't distract me from the story too much. Re-recording it entirely would be a shame because Marsters did such a nice job, but maybe the recording company could dig out the recording and remaster it. James Marsters is an excellent reader and really captures Dresden's personality and brings the reading to life with other sounds like sighs, throat clearings, etc, which people do every day when speaking to one another. Can't wait to listen to the next one.

Great story, even better narration

Very interesting and unique story. Tons of characters introduced that I'm looking forward to learning more about as the series continues. There were a few moments here and there that I felt the character actions seemed a little unrealistic in one or two instances, which I think was used to move the story along in the direction the author wanted to take it. Nothing too unbelievable, but just off enough to notice it.

The narration was amazing! I really felt that the narrator did a fantastic job bringing the main character to life. He perfectly managed to capture Harry Dresden's sarcastic attitude and dry sense of humor.

Great story , greater narration!

A friend of mine has raved many a time about James Marsters rendition of the Harry Dresden novels. I finally decided to give over and give them a listen.
The story is as wonderful as I remembered it & Marsters is utterly fantastic ! As she put it "He just absolutely nails Harry!!"
I couldn't agree more!

Great story, bad production quality

Great book and voice acting horrible sound engineering. At least the story was good enough to get through it.
