Publisher's summary

My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I'm the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I'm the only one there.

With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt. Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters to vampires, while he himself is under suspicion of the crimes.

good start to a great series.

This is such a great series. This is the first of many books and it's a good start but not the best in the series. Both the narrator and the author really come into their own during this series. In fact, the both became my favorite author and narrator. But this is just the beginning and it's great to watch them grow along with the characters.

Good book, (almost) excellent narration.

I was a bit hesitant to buy this book. Honestly, the storyline didn't sound very interesting to me. But, based on all the good reviews of the books in this series, I decided to give it a try. I really enjoyed the book. I think the fact that Harry doesn't take himself too seriously really makes this book / series work. He's not at all what I would expect the typical wizard to be. It definitely kept my attention and I've already started the second book of the series.

James Marsters does a great job of bringing out Harry's character and personality. I don't mind the narrators deep breaths - that's something you would hear in a normal conversation. However, the wet mouth sounds bring the narrator a little too close for comfort. It's a bit like someone is speaking with their mouth inches from your ear. It doesn't ruin the book for me, but it's a bit uncomfortable at times.

Fantasy and Detective Novel Fun

Enjoyable storyline that adds humor to the story and embraces the darker elements. It was well read and a fun, short listen.

EXCELLENT BOOK, lackluster performance

EXCELLENT book series, but the reader supplies an exhausted personality to the protagonist that does not feel right for his personality.

Very Good

This is my second Jim Butcher / Dresden book and it was an excellent read. Full of self-deprecating humor and plenty of suspense (how is he going to get out of this). Didn't think I would like this type of book, but it was very entertaining and took my mind off the world for about 8 hours!

James Marsters is perfect.

Butchers creates the world and Marsters makes it come alive. They are a perfect team.
