Publisher's summary

My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I'm the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I'm the only one there.

With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt. Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters to vampires, while he himself is under suspicion of the crimes.

No dawdling, compact storytelling

I have heard that one has to “get through” the earlier Dresden Files books to get to the best stuff. Frankly, if this is “getting through”, I am happy to do it. There is not a single scrap of fat in this book, it has been aggressively edited down to a tight story that provides multiple forces pushing and pulling the protagonist at any given time, ensuring that the plot plows forward relentlessly and without any dead air. The plot itself is not mind-blowing or altogether noteworthy, but it is entertaining and delivers on tense, edge-of-the-seat moments with regularity. Dresden cracks wise a bit too often in parts, likely some of the rough edges that will be smoothed in later installments, and the motivations of the antagonist seem like an afterthought, but all in all I am in for the long haul.

Engaging Storyline, Distracting Delivery

I found this book based on reviews from other series and overall, I enjoyed it. As other reviews have mentioned, the narration can feel a little off at times - no inflections or tone changes when the story/action calls for it, pauses in areas that seem to slow the story down in places. There also seems to be some areas of the story itself as far as the magical/fantastical elements. There was almost an “incomplete” feel to it. A little more background or extra information may have made the whole “world” feel a little more full/fleshed out. Ultimately, I enjoyed the book and am intrigued enough to continue with the series.

The audio recording was off putting.

I recently completed both eras of Mistborn and started this series while I wait for the fourth installment in the Stormlight Archive series. I have to say that the audio recording for this title is of a much poorer quality. The narrator himself did a good enough job and he’s not as bad as some of the reviews that I read would like you to believe. The story itself is pretty solid for the first entry and I am interested enough to get the second book. Hopefully the recording is better going forward.

A fun little story

As I understand the series gets better at book 4, but really the first book was quite enjoyable. More so than the TV series was, which was excellent even though only one season. This gets a lot more in depth. Bit of magic, bit of sleuthing, bit of demons. Just overall, a fun little story.

I came back for seconds.

I just finished listening to this one for the second time, and I enjoyed it just as much as I did the first time. I am now on the second book and planning to purchase the entire series.

OUTSTANDING first novel in the Dresden series!

James Marsters is an excellent narrator. He read the book as only an accomplished actor can.
