Publisher's summary

My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I'm the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I'm the only one there.

With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt. Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters to vampires, while he himself is under suspicion of the crimes.

Good book, great reader

James Marsters does a terrific job of narrating this book. The story itself is an interesting and original take on wizardry. I like the way the author has obviously done his research about magic.

Dresden is magical

The Dresden Files books are some of the greatest pulp wizard detective series you will ever read. Butcher creates such a vivid world that you believe things from the Nevernever are real.

Must have first in series, but not the best.

This is a better than average audiobook; a solid 3.5 stars. The story is entertaining, but the narration is more along the lines of a reading than a performance. James Marsters has evolved into one of my favorite audiobook readers. His performance in later books in the series are brilliant, but this reading is somewhat flat. This one feels like a first effort, and while very good, it is not great. Still is well worth the credit and was a huge bargain as I picked this up as a $4.95 sale. This is a must listen for me as I highly recommend The Dresden Files series as a whole.

I loved this series

Any additional comments?

My favourite listen is epic fantasy and I just loved this series. The narrator was great and I really enjoyed getting to know Harry Dresdan, his friends and going on adventures with them. I was sad when I finished which is the mark of a great series :)

Second time listening to this series.

I am a Jim Butcher fan! I have listened to Code Alera twice and it was as good the second time. I have listened to The Aeronaut's Windlass: The Cinder Spires, Book 1.

The first book of this series is ok. I look forward to listening to the remaining books again as mean, kind, scary characters are introduced.

Interesting twist on detective fiction

Alright, just so you know where I'm coming from, wizards and such are not my usual thing. They are mildly interesting, but not my first choice for a read. However, this book has been in my wish list for a while and I figured I'd give it a try.

Good story and the wizard\magic angle keeps it fresh. It has a nice old fashion detective story appeal, but with talking skulls and demons. I really liked the main character and thought the first person POV and excellent narration really brought this character to life. The humor was mild, but it did make me chuckle outloud a few times.

All in all, not a bad book.
