Publisher's summary

My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I'm the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I'm the only one there.

With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt. Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters to vampires, while he himself is under suspicion of the crimes.

Amazing!

This book was completely amazing! I’ve been told for months that I’d love this series and if the rest of it is anything like this one I will LOVE it. The fact that it is read by none other than James Marsters (the actor who brought my favorite Buffy Character to life) makes it all the more Epic!

Amazing!

Amazing story and good narration, could have done without the sound of the guy licking his lips or whatever it was.😊

Great book

Enjoyed the book.

The bad .. Sometimes drawn out. He needs to grow a set earlier in situations all the time.

The good. Great character building. He eventually grows a set......after a long time.

Gripping... interesting pot...good performance

I was sceptical to begin with. Some bad reviews on narrator's constant breathing sound etc. But it didn't matter . In fact it ended up aiding narrator in bringing out the emotions of the lead character. Book is very very nice.

great story but unexciting reading

I've read the books and enjoyed then. Unfortunately the narration is too subdued to provoke either the excitement or humor the book deserves.

Good book, good narration, awful post production

The book was quite interesting. Fast paced and fun to listen to. Like many others, I have some complaints about the narration. Unlike many of those posting comments, I think that the style and caliber of narration fit the book quite well. What I found extremely distracting was the narrator's constant swallowing. It was like nails on a chalkboard every time he would swallow.

I put this more on the audio editor as most of it could easily have been edited out of the production.

I am typically quite patient with bad production, but found the swallowing so distracting that I almost stopped listening to the book. My solution was to finally turn the volume down. I normally listen to my books fairly loud, but when I turned it down to the bare minimum required to hear it, I barely heard the distracting swallowing. I was annoyed at having to do this, but was able to finish the book and actually enjoy it.

Wonderful and only the beginning!

Loved this series. This is my second time to listen to it. James Marsters is the undisputed voice of Harry D! Excellent!

Great book. Crap narration.

The only reason I had difficulty listening to this was due to the irritating narration by James Marsters. Having to listen to his heavy swallowing every minute or so was almost painful. Great story, poorly executed.
