Publisher's summary

My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I'm the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I'm the only one there.

With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt. Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters to vampires, while he himself is under suspicion of the crimes.

Drink a little more water, but still fun

If you can overlook the (mild) swallowing issue, then you can enjoy the story. Marsters has the ability to convey what the character feels. Writing is witty and funny, story is great and the characters are perfect for the story.

narrator needs some fine tuning

Good book. enjoyed the characters and plot.
Narrator sighs too much, and sometimes I can hear lips or mouth smacking, like he has a dry mouth. It is distracting.

A great book

I really enjoyed this book. Finished it in a couple of days. The writing style and humor is spot on, and it reads like an action movie

FINISHED BOOK BUT TOOK AWHILE

Few chapters in I realized it was based on series I used to enjoy. The narrator was good except he was blazay when he said spells....a little HPz needed...it did take me time to finish ..

Of a time

I remember reading the physical book when I was much younger and both enjoying it and feeling confused. I’m still enjoying aspects; the worldbuilding is great, the male characters are well-rounded… but the author’s female characters and the way the protagonists relates to women just makes me SHUDDER. Holding open a door for a female detective doesn’t not make you an old school gross old wizardly woman-hating dude. This one is getting returned before I even finish it. Now I’m older I can put a name to the confusion I had about this book, and it’s not a pretty one.

An excellent start to a renowned series!

Loved Harry for all his beautiful quirkiness. the narrator does a phenomenal job with the voices, and it's an excellent example of 1st person narration done right.
