Publisher's summary

My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I'm the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I'm the only one there.

With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt. Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters to vampires, while he himself is under suspicion of the crimes.

The breathing.

The story was good overall, but when I noticed the loud and nasally breathing, it drove me a little nuts...

Wish I had not waited so long to start

Any additional comments?

The thing stood out the most to me was the world Butcher creates. I felt as if he put together the world then created a character to fit into it. It was so well fleshed out, all bassis were covered. I've meant to get around to this series for years, now I'm not sure how I could have waited so long. The great thing is I get months worth of fun catching up.

new friend

I know I am late to the party, but I do feel as if I have just found a new friend in Harry Dresden. I loved the TV show from years ago and am glad to have renewed contact in this series. just the right mix of humor, fancy, danger, evil. Just magic!

Marsters is OUTSTANDING

I had no idea the performance of the narrator could make such a difference to an already well-written book. Marsters has a gift of dropping younright into the middle of every fight, discussion, and thought process. Incredible.

Great Start!

This is the first of rhe Dresden Files. It was Jim Butcher's first novel and wren while he was in college. so it has some minor problems. But in spite of all that it's still a fun story and introduces several of the main characters in the series.

Great Story ... Despite Heavy-Breathing Narrator

Wonderful story .. gripping and very humorous. But the downside is the narrator. He does a very good job EXCEPT for his heavy breathing. This was a significant distraction. Maybe it's the mics. I don't know but it was annoying. Other than that, a great book.

Not Bad

It was a pleasant story to listen to while driving. I started the Dresden files out of order, so picked this one up to understand how the characters evolved in later stories.

Not typical fantasy

This isn't really what I thought it would be going into it but it became something I really really enjoyed. I'm not usually into the whole mystery genre but I feel like this is a great mash up. I love the character's voice and the narrator is the perfect match. I will definitely read more of this series.
