One day, finally daring to ask the voice some tough questions, Kip discovers that his computer scientist parents implanted an artificial intelligence chip in his skull, which connects with a powerful mainframe computer via satellite. He also learns that his parents died under suspicious circumstances and that his very existence is a well-kept secret that will soon come to light - putting his own life and the whole of outpost Starswarm in grave danger.

"An extremely strong story....plenty of suspenseful action in a well-realized setting." (Booklist)
"This is one you won't want to miss. [A] taut, credible, fast-paced adventure story." (Science Fiction Chronicle)
"SF veteran Pournelle demonstrates his gift for traditional SF adventures in this coming-of-age tale that combines fast-paced action with...an appealing protagonist." (Library Journal)
Overall the story was very good. The author did a good job building up Kip, the main character. The end was a little rushed and abrupt. I would recommend this book for SF fans.
Star swarm is one of the best books iv'e ever had the pleasure of listening to, I was unable to pause the playback of this one as it constantly keeps you wanting more...
Starswarm vill give you 10 hours of immense listening pleasure, I can not praise it enough..
The plot is a plausible one in everyday life today
wich only makes the story more beleivable.
The setting is futuristic enough to keep you wondering.
I highly recoment this book to all SciFi fans and
altso to anyone else. If you liked Jurassic Park and it's like you will most definately like this one as Starswarm is in the same class only set far into the future on another world.
This is a good story and is good Sci-Fi. You could say the science is dated but heck, we were supposed to have flying cars by now too!
Love Pournelle! He knows his Sci-Fi. Don't listen to people that say he pushes his politics in his stories. Everyone who has EVER told a story includes their own opinions.
I don't like this narrator. Lloyd James reads well but every character sounds the same.
Good story but I could wait until the next day to start listening again.
Yes I would recommend it but with warnings. I hate a story that takes me through 250 pages just to wrap up in 5. Don't take 10hrs to tell a story just to wrap up in the last 15 minutes.
A quick ending just leaves me with the feeling that author asked his teacher
It may seem like a childrens story but it is not, although the main character is Kipp. It is quite and intriguiging story line with suspense and trechery set in a not too alian landscape and some interesting characters. If there was one flaw, it is the abrupt ending of the story.; like running into a brick wall, like one of these 50's style never ending serials where it finishes without really completing the tail. And there is no 2nd book. Else i would have rated it 4 stars!
Do you remember old style SF stories where a precocious child with a gift and his friends sets out on an adventure to stop the bad guys and save the world?
This is one of those tales, but crafted so that putting a child in dire and dangerous circumstances seems a lot less unlikely than most stories of the type.
With classic SF story-telling, there are aliens (both known and hidden), allies, friends and enemies, enemies turned into friends and enemies plotting in secret. There's a long perilous trek and beings with odd god-like powers. And despite all of this, it often feels understated. Though I may review with some hyperbole, there is very little of it to find in the story, though my descriptions stand as accurate.
Finally, the story's climax seems a bit rushed, but other than that, it works pretty well.
The youth of the main characters caused the story to feel a little like "Ender's Game", but not quiet as good as Card's classic. I really enjoyed the book and missed it when it was over.
Story was well written. However the recording has a couple of repeats. Kip has a secret. Growing up on an outpost research planet, he lives a quiet life. Until things start to change and he looses the voice in his head. Kip has to grow up fast. Kip's journey is well told and has interesting twist and turns.
I liked this book a lot. The only weak part is the ending, too much stuff happens in the last 20 minutes, would not of minded if it had been more detailed. Perhaps there will be a sequel (or there already is?).
Great book though!
I have been listening to these audio books for many years while driving from site to site. This book was very good listening and the story was very well timed and keeps you listening for what will unfold next. Characters enter the story in perfect order and support the writer’s vision. Not like some I have read where the story line jumps and you cannot follow the events. This will entertain you and pass the time without you realizing it.
