Publisher's Summary

Tristran Thorn will do anything to win the cold heart of beautiful Victoria Forester - even fetch her the star they watch fall from the night sky. But to do so, he must enter the unexplored lands on the other side of the ancient wall that gives their tiny village its name. Beyond that stone barrier, Tristran learns, lies Faerie . . . and the most exhilarating adventure of the young man's life.

From number-one New York Times best-selling author Neil Gaiman comes a tale of the dark and miraculous - a quest for true love and the utterly impossible.

"One of the best narrations I've experienced"

Do you know how sometimes you hear a story and a few days after it's over, you're still stuck in that world? That's my experience with Stardust. It's an imaginative and lovely adult fairytale with glorious prose, and it will leave you wishing we had more adult fairytales like this one. By the end of the story, the characters have more depth than in a typical fairytale, which I appreciated. That said, it's not my all-time favorite story.

Gaiman's narration is a huge part of the reason why I'm still thinking of Stardust two days after finishing it. It's magnificent. Each character has his/her own voice, and there's just something so pleasant--for lack of a better word--about the performance. It's exciting and entertaining, but the general narration (not characters' voices) is still somehow soft, like in a bedtime story. (I'm probably about to buy everything Gaiman has ever narrated.)

Awesome. The gift edition with the added interview at the end is definitely worth it. One of my favorite stories of all time.

    "Great Story. Great Narrator"

Anyone apprehensive about an author reading their own work should put their worries to rest. Gaiman is a great reader, and the story is magical, indeed.

    "Charming"

Although I am not particularly a fan of fairy tales, I was intrigued by the sample and was not disappointed. The author/narrator related this charming tale delightfully.

The special edition comments by and interview with the author were interesting. An appreciated bonus.

    "Excellent Book"
    Any additional comments?

I enjoyed the book, but I think this may be the first time that I prefer the movie to the book. The movie has a more satisfying ending for both the father and son, and has more depth to the characters we encounter along the way. We get an answer with the witches story, know the lightening pirates more (or know them as pirates at all), and we get a few more laughs along the way. However, I don't think any of those changes are in line with Neil Gaiman's style: he seems to be all about unusual, somewhat unsatisfying endings, nothing tied up neatly, whereas I prefer a somewhat deeper level of closure. All in all, an excellent story that I would definitely read again.Side note: If you're expecting the same level of relative innocence as the movie had, be prepared. Tristan's conception is a bit more detailed than you would think, if you've seen the movie. No closed doors there!

    "A good adventure."

This is my first book by Neil Gaiman, I enjoyed it enough that I will read more of his work in the future. Although this is supposed to be an adventurous romance story, there was only a little romance to it. But there was lots of adventure even if the ending was anticlimactic. I went home and watched the movie right after listening to this and I like the ending on that version better. As for this being an Adult fairytale, it was pretty tame. This was one of those books that I bought on my kindle and then purchased the whispersync version and only paid around $5 for both. Usually when an author narrates his own book it doesn't work out, but Neil Gaiman could easily get a second job as a narrator for audible he was good.

    "fantastic fairytale!"

besides the story being wonderful all on its own, the author himself is narrating it. He has this almost bemused voice as if he can hardly believe the story as it unfolds. It's very entertaining to listen to, and I can't wait to listen to another one!

"My absolute favorite movie. movie was better"

    Performance:

The book is read by the author who is a really good story teller but, he doesn't imitate woman voice that well. other than that, I really enjoyed hearing him.

    Story:

There is a movie based on this story with the same title. I adore that movie. I have watched it many times. unfortunately, the book is not as good as the movie! This is the case because of their different endings. The movie builds up the story and climaxes in its final 15 minutes then it ties up all the loose ends and concludes with a happily ever after. On the other hand, the story here just kind of withers and dies in the last two chapters. It ends in a way that is certainly not sad but not clearly happy either. The ending somehow undoes the whole story by conveying the feeling that the event described were not very important after all. spoiler: one lover dies while the other lives and stays young for many many centuries, alone, in a land that is not hers and painfully aware of these facts. So why did the events of the book even matter given that they took place within 6 months (as opposed to centuries.)
