Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: How nice that Neil Gaiman writes fairytales for adults. And how lucky for us that he tells the story in his own cackling, drawling, hissing, and murmuring voices. My commute, exercise regimen, and 21st century urban existence vanished as I was drawn into Gaiman's story of quest, romance, murder, and adventure. This is not Mother Goose - this is a wondrous world of magic glass, witches, ogres, and unicorns that I didn't want to leave. ? Beth Anderson

Publisher's summary

In the sleepy English countryside of decades past, there is a town that has stood on a jut of granite for 600 years. And immediately to the east stands a high stone wall, for which the village is named. Here in the town of Wall, Tristran Thorn has lost his heart to the hauntingly beautiful Victoria Forester. One crisp October night, as they watch, a star falls from the sky, and Victoria promises to marry Tristran if he'll retrieve the star and bring it back for her. It is this promise that sends Tristran through the only gap in the wall, across the meadow, and into the most unforgettable adventure of his life.

"Eminently readable, a charming piece of work." (Washington Post)
"An original and well-written fairy tale....This is a refreshingly creative story with appealing characters." (Library Journal)
"The resolution is satisfying and complex, proving that there is more to fairy tales than 'happily ever after'." (School Library Journal)

Every version is the best version.

I read the book, I read the graphic novel, I saw the movie, and now just like those this one seems like the best way to know this story.

A fairytale for adults

I am a big fan of Neil Gaiman, and this novel does not disappoint! I listened to this audiobook while on a road trip with my wife and we enjoyed it very much! Neil Gaiman also narrates and does an excellent job. I love when the author narrates because they have a more intimate connection with the story and characters.

For many reasons, Neil's voice the most important

Have you ever wanted someone to read you a splendid fairy tale? Neil Gaiman reads his own work with such charm and talent he could have made his living on the stage (or in radio plays, Mr. Gaiman). Though lovers of the movie will find differences, they are also the new and charming acquaintances one meets in this original telling of the tale. Thank you for the lovely experience...I was, and still am, enchanted!

Fantastic as always

This was a delight to listen to there's a balanced way it is read that allows you (the listener) to sink into the story from the very beginning. This edition comes with an interview with the author lasting about 30 minutes at the end of the narration so keep listening. I've read, listen to & watched a great many of the books written by Neil Gaiman and I am, by far more invested in these author narrated audio books.
If this is the first book you've come across from Neil then it's a perfect introduction into the world of this authors writing style & story telling ability, if you are a fan then dive back into the clever wit he cannot help but to display.
No matter how familiar you are with the talented Mr. Gaiman you won't regret this purchase!

Can I just unanimously love everything Neil Gaiman writes ?

… because so far I do. This book did not and will not disappoint if you’re a Neil G. fan and the short interview after the epilogue gives you more insight on the method to the madness front that man himself. I found out quite a few gems about the publishing process for this story that I bet you’d like to know as well. Get it. Do it!!!
