Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: How nice that Neil Gaiman writes fairytales for adults. And how lucky for us that he tells the story in his own cackling, drawling, hissing, and murmuring voices. My commute, exercise regimen, and 21st century urban existence vanished as I was drawn into Gaiman's story of quest, romance, murder, and adventure. This is not Mother Goose - this is a wondrous world of magic glass, witches, ogres, and unicorns that I didn't want to leave. ? Beth Anderson

Publisher's summary

In the sleepy English countryside of decades past, there is a town that has stood on a jut of granite for 600 years. And immediately to the east stands a high stone wall, for which the village is named. Here in the town of Wall, Tristran Thorn has lost his heart to the hauntingly beautiful Victoria Forester. One crisp October night, as they watch, a star falls from the sky, and Victoria promises to marry Tristran if he'll retrieve the star and bring it back for her. It is this promise that sends Tristran through the only gap in the wall, across the meadow, and into the most unforgettable adventure of his life.

Critic reviews

"Eminently readable, a charming piece of work." (Washington Post)
"An original and well-written fairy tale....This is a refreshingly creative story with appealing characters." (Library Journal)
"The resolution is satisfying and complex, proving that there is more to fairy tales than 'happily ever after'." (School Library Journal)

Lovely

I love how you end the book Neil. I don’t want to spoil anything. So minor spoiler alert.

Have you read the book yet?

How about now?
Ok. Now that you have, I enjoyed Stardust because it wasn’t depressing. It had sad moments and happy moments. And at the end, it ends well. More important to me, is Neil tells you their life story as prologue. I hate not knowing what happens to my characters after I finish a book.

Thanks Neil :) good stuff.

I saw the movie first, this is better!

If you liked the movie you will love this story! Roll with the differences, and definitely listen to Neil Gaiman tell you about the many incarnations!

A modem fairytale for grown-ups

Neil Gaiman perfectly narrates his modern fairytale, fleshing out the story of the movie more.

Outstanding in all ways

Such a creative and interesting story - delightfully unfamiliar. And I love the rich but simple language used to tell it.

Neil Gaiman never disappoints!

Wonderful book - more rich and fulfilling than the movie, which was also entertaining. Fun to listen to the Q&A after as well

Adult fairy tale

I’m so impressed by this author reading his own work. He is fabulous! Definitely an adult story, but done in good taste. I thoroughly enjoyed this story! Total escape, with no pressure, and a good, surprise ending like fairy tales should have. Definitely recommend!

A sweet tale

I discovered Neil, through the back door so to speak, as a fan of Amanda Palmer. I’ve enjoyed listening to him on interviews and podcasts but I had never read a single book and it felt disingenuous to tell people how much I love him when I hadn’t even delved into his art. Stardust was my first choice to get my feet wet and I’m glad that it was. A sweet little story read impeccably by the author. Now I can genuinely say that I am a Neil Gaiman fan.

Perfect

I would expect nothing less than amazing from Neil Gaiman he never ceases to surprise me or comfort me or to take me somewhere it’s wonderful or terrifying all at the same time. I crave adventure through his words.
