Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: How nice that Neil Gaiman writes fairytales for adults. And how lucky for us that he tells the story in his own cackling, drawling, hissing, and murmuring voices. My commute, exercise regimen, and 21st century urban existence vanished as I was drawn into Gaiman's story of quest, romance, murder, and adventure. This is not Mother Goose - this is a wondrous world of magic glass, witches, ogres, and unicorns that I didn't want to leave. ? Beth Anderson

Publisher's summary

In the sleepy English countryside of decades past, there is a town that has stood on a jut of granite for 600 years. And immediately to the east stands a high stone wall, for which the village is named. Here in the town of Wall, Tristran Thorn has lost his heart to the hauntingly beautiful Victoria Forester. One crisp October night, as they watch, a star falls from the sky, and Victoria promises to marry Tristran if he'll retrieve the star and bring it back for her. It is this promise that sends Tristran through the only gap in the wall, across the meadow, and into the most unforgettable adventure of his life.

"Eminently readable, a charming piece of work." (Washington Post)
"An original and well-written fairy tale....This is a refreshingly creative story with appealing characters." (Library Journal)
"The resolution is satisfying and complex, proving that there is more to fairy tales than 'happily ever after'." (School Library Journal)

Surprised in the Best Way

I have to say that I knew I loved Gaiman's work but I had no idea what a talented narrator he is. I really and truly was in the place with the characters the whole time, and I loved every single second of it. If you need an escape or simply a break from the day to day, give this one a listen--you won't be disappointed.

A Fairy Tail for adults...

Princess Mononoke / Nino Kuni feel to the story, it's an adventure with fantastic characters in magical settings involving nature, old times, and that sort of thing. in some ways it's a similar story to something you've heard before, but it's masterfully executed. You will certainly enjoy this one

Neil reads Neil.

About as brilliant as you'd guess. Neil is a tale weaver with once in a generation talent.

Wonderfully Diverting

Neil Gaiman is a gifted story teller in the tales he crafts, the words he uses and the manner in which he relates his tales. Hearing him tell the story in his own voice in the audiobook is especially wondrous. Stardust is a perfect bedtime story or narrative to travel with, whatever your age.
The final audiobook chapter is an interview with the author- and it is well worth listening to for writers, classes, fans or simply clever people who have an interest in how artists work.

Another amazing story read by Neil Gaiman

My first experience with Stardust was the movie, and I'm glad I went from the movie to this audiobook. I loved the characters when I saw them in the movie, but overall they were a bit too happy and the story had been wrapped in an undeserved bow. I love this tale so much more.

Good Adult Fairy Tale

It’s not my very favorite Gaiman book but it is a nice short adult fairy tale. Performance is great as always with Gaiman. A short bit of sexual content at the beginning.

There’s just something about this book.

Gaiman is a master. He manages to create a world that is somehow familiar and comfortable, yet mysterious and vibrant. This my favorite Gaiman book to date. Listening to him narrate his books is like... well it’s like slipping into an old, comfortable pair of jeans. It’s relaxing. It just... fits.
