Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: How nice that Neil Gaiman writes fairytales for adults. And how lucky for us that he tells the story in his own cackling, drawling, hissing, and murmuring voices. My commute, exercise regimen, and 21st century urban existence vanished as I was drawn into Gaiman's story of quest, romance, murder, and adventure. This is not Mother Goose - this is a wondrous world of magic glass, witches, ogres, and unicorns that I didn't want to leave. ? Beth Anderson

Publisher's summary

In the sleepy English countryside of decades past, there is a town that has stood on a jut of granite for 600 years. And immediately to the east stands a high stone wall, for which the village is named. Here in the town of Wall, Tristran Thorn has lost his heart to the hauntingly beautiful Victoria Forester. One crisp October night, as they watch, a star falls from the sky, and Victoria promises to marry Tristran if he'll retrieve the star and bring it back for her. It is this promise that sends Tristran through the only gap in the wall, across the meadow, and into the most unforgettable adventure of his life.

"Eminently readable, a charming piece of work." (Washington Post)
"An original and well-written fairy tale....This is a refreshingly creative story with appealing characters." (Library Journal)
"The resolution is satisfying and complex, proving that there is more to fairy tales than 'happily ever after'." (School Library Journal)

Great story

What made the experience of listening to Stardust the most enjoyable?

The writing is amazing.

What does Neil Gaiman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Since Niel wrote this book he was able to bring it to life in a way nobody else could.

Any additional comments?

Sex scenes were wierd and aukward so glad there was only one.

Simply Amazing

A tale of fae and fantasy that awakens the child in us while reminding us why fairy tales are told to adults as often as children.

Also, read by the author, who has an exquisite narration style and who presents his own works in a way only the author can. If every Gaiman book could be read by the author, I'd buy them all... even faster than I am now.

Not as clean as the movie if you're going to have children listen to it.

You'll run across some rather adult language from time to time while listening to this version of the story. I was a little shocked to have my children hear the F word.

Amazing Story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I love Neil Gaiman's storytelling and world-building. This was narrated wonderfully and the characters really came to life as well as the events.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The star, Yvaine. She was so full of personality and I enjoyed listening to her grow and develop.

Have you listened to any of Neil Gaiman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes - same across the board - 5 stars.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Catching a fallen star is harder than it seems

I regret reading it...but in the very best way!

This is one of the few books I've encountered to leave me with a feeling of deep regret as soon as I'd finished it. It's a weird sort of regret, at having been cheated by...well, the universe I suppose. Even while reading it, I just knew I'd missed out on something amazing by reading it at exact the wrong time in my life. Had I been just a little younger, or older, or even maybe had listened in better lighting or between different books or meals, I would have then been able to appreciate it the way I can now see it deserves. That's life though, I guess.

Love Gaimen--just not as a narrator :(

Would you consider the audio edition of Stardust to be better than the print version?

No.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Unfortunately, I would prefer a different narrator. Gaiman is an amazing writer and he has a good voice, but strangely I did not care for his narration. Sad :(
