Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: How nice that Neil Gaiman writes fairytales for adults. And how lucky for us that he tells the story in his own cackling, drawling, hissing, and murmuring voices. My commute, exercise regimen, and 21st century urban existence vanished as I was drawn into Gaiman's story of quest, romance, murder, and adventure. This is not Mother Goose - this is a wondrous world of magic glass, witches, ogres, and unicorns that I didn't want to leave. ? Beth Anderson

Publisher's summary

In the sleepy English countryside of decades past, there is a town that has stood on a jut of granite for 600 years. And immediately to the east stands a high stone wall, for which the village is named. Here in the town of Wall, Tristran Thorn has lost his heart to the hauntingly beautiful Victoria Forester. One crisp October night, as they watch, a star falls from the sky, and Victoria promises to marry Tristran if he'll retrieve the star and bring it back for her. It is this promise that sends Tristran through the only gap in the wall, across the meadow, and into the most unforgettable adventure of his life.

Fairytale for Adults

The story had a really creative flow and kept me interested. I enjoyed Neil's Narration style and character voices. I read this on a drive down to LA and it was just perfect for my trip. Easy to follow as an Audio Book too. Sometimes when I listen to books I get lost if there are too many characters with similar names but this one was great.

Wonderful!

What a wonderful narrator - and the author himself to boot! I really really liked this beautifully poetic, funny & interesting fairy tale for adults. It hit the spot when I was craving some fiction that I could quickly finish...although it’s left me wanting more! Now looking at other from this author...:)

Beautiful adult fairytale

I loved the pace of the story and Gaiman’s tone of narrative walks you through the whole book with ease. Particularly for me there were some dialogues that seemed a little bit attached to and old ideological thinking, but of course, it’s something pretty personal and debatable.
I recommend this reading to anyone who likes a light fantasy story, with lovable characters but not too heavy on the plot

So magical

Such a wonderful story, I was sad when it was over. Very enchanting, the world of fairy that he creates is so beautiful and scary. Love that Neil gaiman did the audio book too, he has a great voice for fantasy.

The perfect English fairy tale

When I read this novel I had always read it in my own American accent so it was invaluable to hear the author read it and learn how everything was meant to be pronounced. I got a totally different experience which really gave me a different understanding of the novel hearing the author read it and in addition the author was just a very good storyteller so it was fun to listen to.

Pretty solid overall

The book has an absolutely amazing start and a wonderful amount of detail. Neil's performance is stunning, his voice and tone are perfect for the story. After about midway through the book, the story becomes a bit rushed, however though it is still a great read. Would recommend!
