Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: How nice that Neil Gaiman writes fairytales for adults. And how lucky for us that he tells the story in his own cackling, drawling, hissing, and murmuring voices. My commute, exercise regimen, and 21st century urban existence vanished as I was drawn into Gaiman's story of quest, romance, murder, and adventure. This is not Mother Goose - this is a wondrous world of magic glass, witches, ogres, and unicorns that I didn't want to leave. ? Beth Anderson

Publisher's summary

In the sleepy English countryside of decades past, there is a town that has stood on a jut of granite for 600 years. And immediately to the east stands a high stone wall, for which the village is named. Here in the town of Wall, Tristran Thorn has lost his heart to the hauntingly beautiful Victoria Forester. One crisp October night, as they watch, a star falls from the sky, and Victoria promises to marry Tristran if he'll retrieve the star and bring it back for her. It is this promise that sends Tristran through the only gap in the wall, across the meadow, and into the most unforgettable adventure of his life.

Not quite to life

Would you consider the audio edition of Stardust to be better than the print version?

Sorry, but I didn't really care for the author reading his story. To me, he didn't bring enough flavor to the characters but did a pretty good job otherwise. His narration just fell flat.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Stardust?

Print or the audio book, the ending definitely. I wish the movie kept more of the book's flavor instead of radically changing it up.

Best version

Loved reading it then years later seeing the movie... But this is truly a delight. Turns out Gaiman is a fab narrator as well as game changing author.

Extraordinary Reading of a Lovely Tale

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I love the story of Stardust, having read it several times, but did not expect to be overwhelmed by the excellence of Mr. Gaiman's narration of his tale. I have been impressed by several narrators, and disappointed by a few, but never have I been so captivated by the voices, the rhythm, the delivery that I experienced with this audio book. I recommend it highly--it was a joy to listen to. I enjoy the story of Stardust as written as well as the movie adaptation. Mr. Gaiman's hand was at work in the movie's production as well. I thank him for giving of his talent to read his work to us.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Stardust?

The witch's cackle.

Which character – as performed by Neil Gaiman – was your favorite?

Tristran Thorne

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but it was good to spread it out--savour the tale.

Absolutely enchanting

One of the best books I've ever listened to on audiobook. The narration and content both were superior. I was inside the story from beginning to end! I hope to find more audiobooks read by Neil Gaiman.

I am continually surprised by Gaiman!

Even tho' I've read some of his other work, and in this case had seen the movie, I was positively surprised by the creative nature of this work. Gaiman is a fabulous narrator and hearing it in his voice brought the book to life in powerful ways.

completely wonderful

I feel legitimately angry simply because the world created is amazingly rich, the writing is incredibly well done, and now I've finished listening to the audio book. i simply didn't want it to be over because it was so darn good.

also, you want this version of the audio book. perk of having the author narrate is hearing his interpretation of the rhythm of the dialog. trust me, it's phenomenal (annoyingly so).

author superb narrator and storyteller

I bought this book after reading American Gods and listening to Neverwhere. I loved the latter. At first I was afraid this story wouldn't equal Neverwhere, but, as is true with many books, I grew to like it quite a bit. I still rank Neverwhere as better, but this one is good. The author does a superb job of narrating.

Solid four stars

Impressive prose, beautiful storytelling, and engaging plot. There was a little too much sex for my liking, but it wasn’t erotic.
