Publisher's summary

The intrepid spies, pilots, and sharpshooters of Wraith Squadron are back in an all-new Star Wars adventure, which transpires just after the events of the Fate of the Jedi series!

Three decades have passed since Wraith Squadron carried out its last mission. Taking on the most dangerous and daring operations, the rogues and misfits of the elite X-Wing unit became legends of the Rebellion and the Second Galactic Civil War, before breaking up and going their separate ways. Now their singular skills are back in vital demand - for a tailor-made Wraith Squadron mission.

A powerful general in the Galactic Alliance Army, once renowned for his valor, is suspected of participating in the infamous Lecersen Conspiracy, which nearly toppled the Alliance back into the merciless hands of the Empire. With orders to expose and apprehend the traitor - and license to do so by any and all means - the Wraiths will become thieves, pirates, impostors, forgers...and targets, as they put their guts, their guns, and their riskiest game plan to the test against the most lethal of adversaries.

It’s always hard saying goodbye

After a brief prologue this story gets going. We meet Vort “Piggy” S’Bingring who has become a mathematics teacher. He’s been out of the action for nearly a decade. When Face comes to Vort for help Vort tells him to shove off. Face Loran being himself talks Vort into one last journey with a team of new Wraiths. A very fun spy novel begins and through flashbacks we can truly see and understand why Vort S’Bingring left the New Republic to teach math. This book is bitter sweet because it’s the end of an era. Almost all the Expanded Universe characters get a role in either this or Crucible.

PS Disney, you own the rights to the Legends novels. Why not put them out unabridged? I see only $$$$ for you. Remember every single Star Wars novel was a New York Times best seller. All of them. Maybe not number 1. But almost always in the top 20.

only one complaint

Bindi's voice was terrible, otherwise the narrator and production of the audiobook were great. The story itself was also good, everything I'd hope from an Xwing book. could have used more Corran Horn, but I suppose that can't be helped.

Blown away by the hyperspace leap in story

I grew up reading these X-Wing novels, a reasonable chunk of literature to a young teen. I didn’t realize then that they were basically narrarated comics, with dialogue that was simple, straight forward, very single note. Coming back years later, I accepted that quickly, but enjoyed nostalgia and my widened understanding of Star Wars.

But then.... there’s Mercy Kill. Every interesting but sometimes half hearted idea has been taken to its logical conclusion. Detail in the first “flashback chapter/prologue” could almost put individual books from the earlier series to shame. It’s gripping, it’s tragic, it’s exhilarating, it’s utterly fantastic. Marc Thompson should be paid like an actor. Each character is unique, main characters all have their own quirks that by the time you’re in the second chapter, you barely need reminding who’s speaking.

Fantastic writing, Acting, and a conclusion to a series I loved as a kid with a book that suits me as an adult

I like the twist the story takes

This is enjoyable addition to the X wing series. Lets the new generation forge their on path and still have characters you know and love pop up.

Great exciting ride

This was a great book I am disappointed, that with the reboot and the untimely death of the author, that we won't have another wraith story. The characters were fun and developed adequately. Piggy coming full circle and putting to rest his unrealized demons was rewarding to read IMO. I highly recommend this book.

my favorite

This is my favorite story from the original book series. I enjoyed the character's and how it continued from the Fate of the Jedi story arch.
