National Public Radio's 1981 adaptation of Star Wars was one of the most successful presentations in the history of radio: and a very tough act to follow. Nevertheless, two years later, the members of the Star Wars production team eagerly returned to create a radio version of The Empire Strikes Back.
Like its predecessor, this electrifying drama boasts an outstanding cast (including Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Anthony Daniels as See Threepio, Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian, and John Lithgow as Yoda); a greatly expanded script, with many scenes not found in the movie; and audio engineering of unparalleled excellence. The Empire Strikes Back takes you once more into a galaxy of pure sound and limitless imagination for an adventure you'll never forget.

The performance is great and the story more detailed than the movie. Loved these when I got hold of them on cassette back in the early 80s. Am glad to have the complete production now.
Short and sweet reviews, Allentown pa
terrific again, love the extra dialogue of the characters, vader is more evil in these versions rather than seeing the movies.
On Down River
Brian Daley is amazing in his ability to expand the classic Star Wars stories and tell us the rest of the story. A must for any true Star Wars Fan. Luke is performed by Mark Hamel and 3PO performed by Anthony Daneils! Awesome!
It was easy to get lost in each episode of the book. Wonderful for all ages !
Learning about who to trust. A great moral, I learned from this story !
They brought the characters to life. Always a joy to have characters from a movie, read the story to you. Stirring up memories, as one listened !!!
The whole story was very interesting !!
Yes. The radio Dramas were produced and put out on National Public Radio. I listened to them and loved them as a child and I still do!
This story adds on to the films, and expands where there simply was not time in the films. Vader comes off FAR more evil in the Radio Dramas. They take the existing characters and scenarios and flesh them out more than the movies could. Mark Hamill (Luke), Anthony Daniels (C3PO) and Billy Dee Williams (Lando) reprise and expand their roles from the film.
I've listened to the Original Star Wars Radio Drama which featured Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels. Their performance really shines in this one. Sadly, I've not heard anything else with Billy Dee Williams in it, but with his svelte voice, I'm sure it would come across great!
It took me back to sitting in front of the radio, staring in awe. Waiting for the next episode was the WORST. For a true experience, listen to each episode then wait a week for the next. Ah, who am I kidding? Listen to them as much as you can!
I loved the fleshing out of the characters. I don't have the original Star Wars Drama on Audible as I had bought a CD copy a few months ago.
I love this recording. It feels like you have the movie on, but you're putting up dishes in the kitchen, so you can't see the screen (yes, I'm aware that I just completely outed myself). Unfortunately, as this is a radio broadcast that is split up into multiple episodes, there is an introduction and a credit section every 25 minutes or so, which does get annoying.
I listen to audible with a pile of cats all over me. It's "FUR-tastic!"
May the force be with you! Not exactly three words buts it's lots of fun to listen to
When Leah, Han, and Luke end up in the trash compactor. That scene was great.
I love R2-D2 and C3po's bantering back and forth. The scene where Hahn tells R2 that Wokkies are known to tear people's arms out of their sockets if they lose. So C3po tells R2 to like the wokkie win! classic!
When C3p0 tells R2 that he must come back safely.
This is a great audio version of the beloved movie. If you love Star Wars or would like to introduce audible books to the younger generation-this is a great start
I enjoy both Fiction and Non Fiction Books. Not having the best of eye sight, Audible books are a bonus. Great stuff.
This was read like a story without the interruptions of saying the same thing over and over like Star Wars did.
Didn't really have a favorite character. Liked them all :)
I enjoyed all of them.
Great science fiction!
A good read / listen. Recommended for Science Fiction fans.
"Excellent and Highly Recommended!"
We got this after enjoying the first audio book in the series (Star Wars) and couldn't be happier with getting the next in the series. It wasn't long after purchase that we started listening and before we knew it we had listened to it all.
Its an excellent story and done very well for audio listeners, with great narrators and its great having different narrators for each character as its makes it a very enjoyable listen. You get into the story really well and if you gave seen the films (the original ones) then you even start to imagine scenes from the film.
Thoroughly enjoyed this audio book and cannot wait to get the next in the series. Highly recommended to all and I know this will be listened to again and again.
"Another jewel in the Star Wars crown"
Before you listen to The Empire Strikes Back, listen the Star Wars.
The advice isn't isn't based on potential plot confusion but it will help to embed the voices, style and feel of the production which is strangely familiar yet unfamiliar at the same time.
Again, the performances are strong and the additional scenes are a intriguing for those that are fans of the film.
Once again, Perry King's performance of Han Solo is as good as Harrison Fords.
It's lovely, enjoy it!
"Another fantastic production"
Has the same high quality production as the original and because of the increased length of running enables them to add in some small sub parts that make some parts of the film make more sense.
Highly recommended if you are a fan of the films (& most would say this was the best film of the original 3)
