This book kept me interested into the very end. I am not a person who picks apart a book on its technical details but by the pure enjoyment of the read. I am sure there are parts which are not up to the other Star Trek writes, but I still enjoyed it considerably. Having it narrated by William Shatner was a bonus and added to the books quality. I will be listening too all the books in this series.
and it is wince-inducing. This is a sub-par Star Trek novel. In fact it sounds like a slightly longer version of fanfic that you can find online. The plot is thin and there is zero character development.
It gets two stars because it's amusing to here Shatner give voice to Data.
After the Ashes of Eden, I was motivated to try out more of the Kirk books by Shatner, but I was very disappointed by The Return. The beginning is interesting, and I?ll accept the premise, which is a bit weak, but the story evolves into the lowest common denominator ST novel. There are so many good ST writers out there who set the bar high, this is not one of them. As the story went on, it became a series of dots from STNG and STV just being connected. Most troublesome was ease and almost dismissive way any troubles Kirk found himself in could be overcome with little or no effort on his part, just a single sentence from the narrator (which after all is Shatner coming to the rescue of Kirk I guess). I at least expected to see some team work and classic ST interdependence to solve problems, but not here. Kirk is out on his own (with the narrator) and nothing can stop him.
And so my Watch begins...
I know they can't do an unabridged version when they dramatize it, but I do wish it was a longer read. I'm sure the book had more detail and information that seemed glossed over. But I do enjoy the added music and sound effects. I enjoyed the story and definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to read the Shatnerverse of Star Trek.
Southern IT guy that is a christian and loves scifi. I hated all the reading in school, found out later in life that I love being read to.
I got this book because a friend told me is was great. It thought it was ok, but not great. I think the problem this audiobook has is that is not unabridged.
Retired bookkeeper, married, Mom of 2, two granddaughters. Love cozy mysteries.
We, in our family, are Star Trek fans. However, this story just did not hold my interest.
Instructional Designer is the area of Workforce Development.
Story and plot was well written and closely matches Star Trek storyline. A must for any Star Trek fan. Shatner is awesome!
Smart, Engaging, Great
The fact that James T. Kirk was brought back to life by William Shatner himself after the weak death scene in Star Trek: Generations.
Kirk voiced by William Shatner, everyone else voiced by him doesn't work entirely though.
If you're a Star Trek fan who's dieing for more of Shatner as Kirk, then this is for you!
I really didn't care for the movie "Star Trek-Generations". I'll go as far as saying that I like Star Trek 5 even better than "Generations"
I didn't like the way they killed off Kirk. If Spock, Scotty and Bones can still be alive in the future during STNG, why not Kirk? This book should have been the next movie in the Star Trek franchise after Generations. It picks up right after the events of that movie and it's no cheesy resurrection story, it was well thought out and executed. This is one of the top two best Star Trek audio books of all time by any author.(Go ahead and look it up)
The sound effects and music really add to the experience and Shatner does a good job with the different voice characterizations. A must listen for any Star trek fan.
This is a good book for Star Trek fans, but what do you expect when you bring three Star Trek Captains together for one great edventure. It has a outstanding suprise dealing with Spock and the Borg. This is a must read.
"Shatner writes himself back to life"
In many ways I get the feeling that Shatner wrote this book because he couldn't cope with the idea of a star trek universe without Kirk. Kirk is the out and out hero in this book and while most of our other favourite characters appear, this is a kirk story.
The book shares Shatner's bombastic sensibility and addresses many of the failings of the 'generations' film. The book is a no holes barred adventure and is has a unique charm. If you enjoy Shatner's sense of humour and grandiosity you will like this.
"An enjoyable story and read by the one of the best"
The story follows on well from the Star Trek Generations movie. Whilst some elements of the plot are a bit far fetched it's a great listen and has all the classic Star Trek moments. Kirk and Picard in another battle to the end. Enjoyed it.
"shatner is amazing"
the story is amazing. the narrative is well thought out and the sound effects help make the story more real. I would recommend this book to everyone who is a star trek fan.
"Make a difference"
This could have easily been the following film to generations instead of first contact. Shatner at his best.
"A welcome inclusion of Kirk into Stat Trek"
Yes. It's great to see William Shatner's contribution to the Star Trek mythos. It's a great 3hr
story featuring Kirk, Picard and Spock. it's thrilling to listen to and follow.
Ashes of Eden although I haven't listened to it at time of writing this review.
The characters come to life and Shatner brings enthusiasm to the story associated with him playing the part of James T Kirk. The whole story is covered with his passion and dedication to the genre.
Yes unfortunately I had to listen in two parts as there wasn't time.
A great story and well worth the price paid.
