Publisher's summary

In the late 21st century, humanity has united after countless years of warfare, and turns toward the stars. But when an alien spacecraft crashlands in the South Pacific bearing visitors from another world, the Vulcans, Earth must decide whether to extend the hand of friendship or the fist of war.

In the distant future, horrible dreams torment Admiral James T. Kirk, dreams prompted by his reading of Strangers from the Sky, a book about that historic first contact. He dreams of an alternate reality where he somehow changed the course of history, and destroyed the Federation before it began.

Great lesser known story

This was a surprisingly well-constructed tale of time travel and the illustrious Enterprise crew’s efforts to prevent the destruction of their timeline.

Golden Age Trek Novel

Very enjoyable abridgement of a fun novel. A bit of magic and mystery, aided by Nimoy and Takei's good voice work.

Clashes with tv series canon

The story talks about first contact between humans and Vulcans, but tells a story quite different from what was told in the television series. It made it harder for me to accept the story. I don't know if I would have enjoyed it better if I didn't know the tv series' version of events.

I really wish they wouldn't abridge the Star Trek books. They cut so much out. It feels like they dump two-thirds of the written book. You don't get to know the characters, and the story is over before you realize it started. I can only hope that the unabridged version was more enjoyable, despite the clashing "history" of first contact.

The best part: hearing George Takei and Leonard Nimoy.

Nice

Another of my favorite StarTrek books. I found it on Audible for sale. It was abridged and I felt it was too compressed but I still enjoyed it. The best part was that it was read by Mr.Takei and some parts of Spock was read by none other than Mr.Nemoy. Both were wonderful. I wish there were non abridged versions!!

Enjoyable, but not unabridged

I had hoped that this was an unabridged reading of the book, and the description simply stated it was the original recording. Alas, this is a very much abridged adaptation. Enjoyable, yes. What I expected and wanted, no.

I will need to be more careful in the future. If you are considering this book, please be aware of all this.

Entertaining!

Where does Star Trek: Strangers from the Sky rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Top 3 - I will hear it again, and again.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Spock, because he's Spock, I can relate to being too logical. He helped the story's credit.

What about George Takei and Leonard Nimoy ’s performance did you like?

The way it felt like I was in the Enterprise and they were reading to me, it gives a thorough performance, almost like the show but in audio.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, the end had a nice touch to the story, without spoilers, it did make you thing "was it"?

Any additional comments?

For the amount price listed, these are bargain brand, genuine show like entertainment. I will hear these over again.

Poor adaptation

Loved the book, but this was chopped up way too much to be coherent much less maintain the integrity and majesty of the original book.

Too short but nostalgic enough

This adaptation is far too short to capture the delight of the full novel. Three stars means I liked it, though. I read the original at least 35 years ago, and this really took me back. I’ll probably go read the novel again (well, of course I kept my copy!)

I suggest reading the novel first. All the nuances of the relationships, and the details of all the intertwining plots, have been lost in the adaptation. But hearing George Takei and the late great Leonard Nimoy read to me? That was a real treat!

Little Depth to the Story

Choppy story with little character development of the new characters we don't already know. Takei is decent enough as the narrator but gets no points from me just because he is Mr. Sulu.
