This book continues the same problems in The Return. Huge issues are brought up and solved with a single sentence. How Kirk got from the Borg Home World to here, now, is all explained away with I think three sentences. The whole Federation is "dying" because of a single virus, but the problems of the Federation that make is so fragile are never examined. It is just stated "dying."
Painting the ST universe with such wide brush strokes is hard to take in after getting such great detail and character development over the years from writers like Diane Duane.
When I first read The Return, I thought it was cute that Shatner brought his character back to life and allowed Kirk to interact with ST's current stars. Sure, it's campy as all get out, but it's fun.
One criticism is that I think Shatner tries to hard to drop the name of every major ST character there is. One would think that Starfleet only had 10 officers capable of working together and sends them everywhere.
Fun to listen to at work though. It makes pouring over spreadsheets less painful.
And so my Watch begins...
It was nice seeing Kirk back to himself after previous book, but felt a bit rushed to me. Unabridged would have been nice, but I liked the added sound effects and music. Overall if you like Shatner and Kirk, you'll enjoy it.
The story was well written and fast paced. William Shatner provides a superb dramatic reading. I am now hooked on these books.
It did not feel like any of the characters were genuine to the characters of the show. Shatner's version of Kirk is horrid. His interpretation of what Jean Luc Picard is like is insane
I throughly enjoy the continuing missions of Capt. James T Kirk. Already down loading Spector. Only other suggestions would be to get other original cast members to narrate with Shatner.
Ok I have a few beefs.
1. Who the heck is "Rolk" and why does he sound like Worf?
2. What's with Dr. McDonald why is she called McDonald here, and McCoy in the next one. In print this was not the case...She is a descendant of Dr. McCoy that's why she is called "Bones".
3. It's not pronounced Peecard...
he should have known better. Other than that I like this book, but normally would not have bought it because it is abridged.
"shatners kirkocentric tale"
this is ok. its got a bit too much unnecessary peripheral complexity and crash bang action to come across well in audio. its written by shatner, so kirk gets: a priveledged relationship to sarek, to punch picard and the girl as well as saving the federation via a black hole in the plot!
Thrilling and filled with anticipation. Kirk at his best! Worth listening to, many times over!
William Shatners narration
The other books by William Shatner and Garfield/Judith Reeves-Stevens
Its a pity that Star Trek:Captain's Blood isn't on audible.co.uk to complete the 9 part series.
1. Ashes of Eden, The Return, Avenger
2. Spectre, Dark Victory, Preserver
3. Captain's Peril, Captain's Blood, Captain's Glory
The part were Spock and Kirk are unknowingly fighting each other and their reaction when they find out...
He's back...and better than ever...
This is one of my favourites.
Pity he doesn't do more. His last one was in 2006. Maybe he'll bring back another for 2016. Fifty years after he started in the Star Trek series.
"Star Trek "Avenger" william shatner."
This is the third novel by William Shatner relating the further adventures of Captain James T. Kirk, following on from "Ashes of Eden", and "The Return". It is probably the best of the trillogy and Shatner, as author, knows how to read the stories. It brings back Spock and the crew of the Next Generation (Picard et all) in a story about eco-terrorism and an attempt to destroy the Federation. Shatner is obviously a much better author than he is a director (Star Trek V : The Final Frontier --- A Very Forgettable movie). He went on to write another trillogy about Kirk after this one, which I believe focusses on the alternate universe theory and Kirk's double from that universe. Although i give this recording five stars, listeners should be aware that this is an abridgement of the novel only. I'm sure the actual novel is a better read.
Commander Christine McDonald. A feisty young science vessel commander in the mould of Katherine Janeway of "Voyager" fame.
The reunion meeting between Kirk and Spock on Vulcan.
Kirk saves the Federation ----- again.
Simon and Schuster produce excellent quality recordings in audio books. I'd say they were one of the best in the business.
Star Trek as always something close to my heart as a kid and into my adult life. the William shatner storys are beyond good. The storys are what star trek is meant to be. If only they have made movie versions of the books.
