Publisher's summary

It’s survival of the fittest in a brutal war of extinction!

Created in the gene labs as super soldiers, the Highborn decide to replace the obsolete Homo sapiens. They pirate the Doom Stars and capture the Sun Works Ring around Mercury. Now they rain asteroids, orbital fighters and nine-foot tall drop troops onto Earth in a relentless tide of conquest.

Marten Kluge is on the receiving end. Hounded by Thought Police, he lives like an ant in a kilometer-deep city. The invasion frees him from a re-education camp but lands him in the military, fighting for the wrong side. Star Soldier is the story of techno hell in a merciless war, with too many surprises for any grunt’s sanity. Star Soldier is a full novel, 82,000 words in length by Vaughn Heppner, Writers of the Future winner, Vol. IX.

What a waste of time!

Did not enjoy this V. Happier book and won't be finishing the series. A lot of the story line just doesn't work with too much conflicting threads within the story.

very good read

intresting comparison to a extreme socialist society and military society. you see martin grow from a lowly terrorist trying to escape one society to get caught up in the other.

too much vocal fry

sure, it makes the bad guys seem worse, but it also hurts the listener's ears. Does anyone really talk like that other than performers?

I loved the Social Unity experiment

I thought the narrator would be a burden to follow. Deep, almost too deeply voiced. He was overly dramatic and slow the first several chapters.

But as the book continued this improved. remained a slow speaker, but some good characters were uncovered.

The book is an interesting depiction of social unity. Humorous since it is an possible extrapolation of where we (the world) are heading politically.

God forbid that we ever tilt so far.

Didn't Click for Me

I gave a three because while this was entertaining, it didn't quite click for me. Very much, "close but not quite", and I might give the second book a try. If you like this genre, you should give it a try and see if you like it better than I.

fun begining

this is a fun beginning to the series. I look forward to continuing in the series, although I found the reading of the narrator to be painfully slow and over pronounced. most of this was solved by speeding up the 'Read speed' by approximately 10%.

Good Story

The story it self is very good. The narration takes a bit to get used to. After awhile you get used to. It almost seems to be a computer gen. voice but it's not. I will check out the next book!

Different favor but action pack series

I'm in book 4 and this series is good. It took me a while to get into the storyline but it grew on me.

Narration kills this audiobook

I've read all the Doomstar series and I was looking forward to relaxing through listening to it as a "second read". However, the narrator is simply horrible. It really ruined the entire experience.
