Publisher's Summary

Brutha is the Chosen One. His god has spoken to him, admittedly while currently in the shape of a tortoise.

Brutha is a simple lad. He can't read. He can't write. He's pretty good at growing melons. And his wants are few.

He wants to overthrow a huge and corrupt church. He wants to prevent a horribly holy war. He wants to stop the persecution of a philosopher who has dared to suggest that, contrary to the Church's dogma, the Discworld really does go through space on the back of an enormous turtle. (Which is true, but when has that ever mattered?) He wants peace and justice and brotherly love. He wants the Inquisition to stop torturing him now, please.

But most of all, what he really wants, more than anything else, is for his god to choose someone else...

Please note: This is a vintage recording. The audio quality may not be up to modern day standards.

What the Critics Say

"Pratchett is the funniest parodist working in the field today, period." (The New York Review of Science Fiction)
"Terry Pratchett is simply the best humorous writer of the 20th century. Wodehouse, Waugh, Sharpe, etc. all have their merits, sometimes considerable, but Pratchett really is a cut above the rest." (Oxford Times)

"Not really like the other Discworld books"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Definitely. I've yet to find a Terry Pratchett book I haven't loved, and would do anything I can do to expose others to how great the Discworld books are.

What did you like best about this story?

It deals with possibly controversial subject matter in a way that is very thought provoking, and exposes readers to different viewpoints.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book made me laugh quite frequently. There are also a few bits which are quite sad

    Any additional comments?

It's quite clearly still set in the Discworld universe, yet manages to feel quite different by featuring unique characters and settings. I believe it's also set in the past of the main Discworld books.

    "So good"

I am a huge fan of Discworld and am currently re-living them through audiobook. This was so much fun to listen to. Nigel Planer does a great job narrating. I am looking forward to listening to the rest of the series.

    "somewhat confusing..."
What did you like best about Small Gods? What did you like least?

i found this perticular story to be quite confusing, but i admit that it might be because it took me a long time to get through the book and i only got to listen to it for short amounts of time at any given time so that might be why i had trouble following the story

Would you be willing to try another book from Terry Pratchett? Why or why not?

i've read or listened to almost all of his books so indeed yes :)

What about Nigel Planer’s performance did you like?

Nigel has a good strong voice that i never get annoyed with or tired of listening to

Was Small Gods worth the listening time?

no, but like i said, that might be due to real life making me unable to follow my usual listening habits

A good book but the audio track sounds old, it needs to be redone or cleaned up to improve the overall quality

An insightful novel which works on a lot of levels, it's an adventure story, a travelogue and a philosophical treatise on the nature of the Church as opposed to religious.

    "terrible recording quality"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

no - because the recording quality was appalling and very hard to put up with

What was one of the most memorable moments of Small Gods?

when the main character plays chess with death

What didn’t you like about Nigel Planer’s performance?

he gabbled and spoke far too fast so much of the writing was lost - the terrible recording quality didn't help the performance at all. The sound level fluctuates throughout

Do you think Small Gods needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No - worked ok as a stand alone story

    Any additional comments?

don't convert poor recordings to digital and offer on Audible - it reflects badly on your quality control [or lack of]

    "Excellent as always"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I am already a Pratchett fan, and so expected to like this audiobook, but I enjoyed it so much that I listened to it twice in a row. I find that with the audiobook you notice small nuances which are swamped when I am reading

What was one of the most memorable moments of Small Gods?

    The turtle meeting the philosophers

What about Nigel Planer’s performance did you like?

Nigel Planers voice is clear and easy to listen to, giving good characterisation and without heavy accents which might be offputting to some.

"Sharp insightful wit - the work of a genius"
What made the experience of listening to Small Gods the most enjoyable?

I think Terry Pratchett was a bona fide genius. Small Gods is full of profound wisdom and sharply insightful thinking underpinning great jokes and vivid characters. I guess as a standalone book it could be a good introduction for those unfamiliar with the Discworld series, although there're no characters in it I love quite as much as some of the witches or the guards of the other works (apart from Death, who is great), so start here then make sure to read more! I think Nigel Planer does a good job. This is one of the first audiobooks I've ever tried and, although it took me a while to get used to it, I really got into it. Definitely worth a listen - the overall conceit is pure genius and it's brilliantly executed.

    "Wonderful book"

I love this book, it is I think a perfect description of religion and how men twist and change the original thinking. It is my favourite Terry Pratchet. Highly recommended.
