Publisher's summary

The new novel in the New York Times best-selling Dresden Files series.

No one's tried to kill Harry Dresden for almost an entire year, and his life finally seems to be calming down. For once, the future looks fairly bright. But the past casts one hell of a long shadow.

An old bargain has placed Harry in debt to Mab, monarch of the Winter Court of the Sidhe, the Queen of Air and Darkness - and she's calling in her marker. It's a small favor he can't refuse, one that will trap Harry Dresden between a nightmarish foe and an equally deadly ally, and one that will strain his skills-and loyalties-to their very limits.

It figures. Everything was going too well to last....

Please note: A few lines of text from one section of the original book are missing from this 2008 recording. This is the best available source audio from the publisher.

Critic reviews

“Superlative.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“Butcher...spins an excellent noirish detective yarn in a well-crafted, supernaturally-charged setting. The supporting cast is again fantastic, and Harry’s wit continues to fly in the face of a peril-fraught plot.” (Booklist, starred review)

“A tricky plot complete with against-the-clock pacing, firefights, explosions, and plenty of magic. Longtime series fans as well as newcomers drawn by the SciFi Channel’s TV series based on the novels should find this supernatural mystery a real winner.” (Library Journal)

Small Favor

I love this series. Each one just gets better. Chapters 13 and 33 had glitches in them so I missed some content. Don’t know if it’s just my download or an overall problem with this audiobook.

some skips

There are few places where the audio skips, and bits of the story are missing. Just a paragraph or two it seems. Just enough to be annoying. But, otherwise, a fantastic performance.

Incomplete

There is a section of the book that is missing. In chapter 13 the track skips and there's no difference in the timetable but goes into a completely separate paragraph.

missing pieces of the book.

There is a whole conversation missing from a scene and James marsters changed a few if the voices of characters that have appeared in previous books. for instance, a 2 characters that are in at least 5 other books that he suddenly switched thier accents. giving the previously British character an american accent and the American character suddenly english accent. he has changed character voices suddenly before but this book was the most disorienting and breaks the immersion.

as the series goes, this is where I see a dip in story. a sudden love interest that seems way out of nowhere and makes little sense plus the established voices of characters changing really hampered the overall experience.

Something is... Off.

Maybe it's because it's not buzzy multimedia but the direction and performance felt different, Dresden seemed more low key. Quieter delivery. Sentences seemed clipped at the end.

Faulty audio

Chapter 13 has a part missing.
Not my favorite Dresden so far, but some details will come in handy to follow the continuing sub-stories. Which are the reason why I continue on with the series. And James Marsters, of course.

Narration Small Complaint

James Marsters is great. Isn't consistent with accents from past books though. Slightly annoying if you are listening to the books close together and in order like I am. He still is great though!

excellent as always

an excellent Dresden book fraught with conspiracy character and plot. and the plot only thickens from here more intrigue more suspense more is in store for Harry Dresden and that has become clear as the books have gone by and I can't wait to read more

Sorry, Dresden, I'm OUT.

As much as I've enjoyed portions of this series, I'm quickly remembering why I had stopped listening... and why this will be my last one.
The author has some really great ideas at times, but for me the enjoyment has been trumped by his 7th grade sophistication when it comes to how Harry Dresden is treated by his "superiors" and rivals on the white council; by the boiling anger from Michael at times where it doesn't fit the situation; by Murphy's anger and frustration with Harry in situations where she should be more understanding and informed. I think Butcher is trying to create empathy for Harry when he is treated with hostility, scorn, contempt, etc. by White Council members. But it's so unbelievable, so irrational and unfair, that it becomes simply stupid.
