Publisher's summary

The new novel in the New York Times best-selling Dresden Files series.

No one's tried to kill Harry Dresden for almost an entire year, and his life finally seems to be calming down. For once, the future looks fairly bright. But the past casts one hell of a long shadow.

An old bargain has placed Harry in debt to Mab, monarch of the Winter Court of the Sidhe, the Queen of Air and Darkness - and she's calling in her marker. It's a small favor he can't refuse, one that will trap Harry Dresden between a nightmarish foe and an equally deadly ally, and one that will strain his skills-and loyalties-to their very limits.

It figures. Everything was going too well to last....

Critic reviews

“Superlative.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“Butcher...spins an excellent noirish detective yarn in a well-crafted, supernaturally-charged setting. The supporting cast is again fantastic, and Harry’s wit continues to fly in the face of a peril-fraught plot.” (Booklist, starred review)

“A tricky plot complete with against-the-clock pacing, firefights, explosions, and plenty of magic. Longtime series fans as well as newcomers drawn by the SciFi Channel’s TV series based on the novels should find this supernatural mystery a real winner.” (Library Journal)

Take the bad reviews with a grain of salt

of the few poor reviews some are just flat out extreme exaggerations and the others never bothered to read the previous books in the series and were upset they were not given full explanations and back stories from the previous 7 books. duh!?!

First the missing audio in chapter 13. It was not 10 mins or skipped all the way to the end of the entire 13+ hour book. It was a total of 2 mins of narration of one single conversation between Harry and a Darnearian. That's it. Out of 800+ mins of narration 2 mins were lost. Audible and the publisher even went back and researched all the original master recording and the supplied audio files from the narrator that made up the master file. Those 2 mins were not on any of them. So just deal with it. It's not as if this was not first a written as a novel that you could read to find out what was missed or anything. So, gosh....... if it really bothered you not knowing what was said......READ IT !?!

So 2 mins lost of a single not even pivotal conversation that had no effect on the over all storyline.

Finally listeners that are too dense to know you might be a bit confused and not given an entire back story of the over all storyline when you decide to jump into a long book series at book 7!?! Maybe try starting at book one next time!!

It has always bothered me a bit when Jim Butcher has Harry repeatedly explain certain things over and over at nauseum throughout each novel for the entire series. Never understood why. Well now I know...because there at stupid people in this world that need things explained repeatedly and those that feel every book should fully explain the ENTIRE series backstory no matter what book in the 15 + on going series book they happen to choose to start with.

Over All category should likely be 4 stars because of the editors not catching that lost 2 mins in chapter 13. But it has zero to do with the quality of the actual story or the narrators performance etc. It was simply a technical issue which is only covered in the overall category. Giving a overall of one star and digging the story author and narrator with bad ratings as well is spiteful and disingenuous at best. Shame on you.

Reading some reviews on Audible over all makes me hope some of these people I never have to meet or deal with in my real life. Literally they are the types that walk thru life looking and hoping to find fault in everything in a feeble attempt to make themselves feel better by dragging others down into their pit of insecurity and self loathing. Stay away......stay far far away from me.... you Debby Downers!!!

Was a bit tedious in places

Good story in the Dresden line, but not the best. Couple of the battle scenes were tedious to follow.

Would be a 5-star book if not for the sexism

I‘ve enjoyed the series so far and Small Favor was no exception. The books are definitely getting better and better. I keep vainly hoping, though, that the author will veer away from the cringey sexism (‘crying like a girl’) and even worse - the objectification of nearly every freaking woman Harry encounters. I want to like Harry but just when I start to, he’s making gratuitous comments about a teenager’s breasts or his boss’ curves. It’s impossible for a woman in these novels to not be sexualized. It’s gross. I’m dreading the book where the Archive hits puberty, I’m sure he’ll find a way to objectify her too.

The narrater is really good. I can’t imagine a better Harry. He’s really nailed a handful of characters. I gave him 4 stars only because his range is rather limited. You can’t tell one female character from the other. Thomas and Michael are often indiscernible as well. I’m always impressed when narraters pull off as much as Marsters has, but I’ve definitely listened to others who can double Marster’s number of unique voices so 4-stars seemed most fair.

One teeny thing that almost no one else will catch or care about - Stroger Hospital treats patients regardless of their ability to pay/healthcare insurance. No patient is denied care. I don’t fault the author for not knowing every last detail of the Chicago healthcare scene - just wanted to give the hardworking people there a little cred !

Getting better but still too many Mary Sue's.

The writer is still taking cheap ideological pot shots and has a hard time with the reality of firearms, using ignorant buzz words instead of reasonable and relevant.

The number of Mary Sue characters continues to grow and I am sure Murphy is going to be revealed as the second coming in the next book, or close enough to not make a difference.

incredible nail-biting action to mind games

Narrated by James Marsters this tale comes to life through his narration. From the voices, to his able to make you feel each characters’ emotions it has been delightful listening to Marsters become a masterful narrator.

I know I say this all the time, but hands to God, this series gets better with every book. From the nail-biting pace to the favor they task Harry with, there are twists and turns, betrayals, revelations and a lot of kickassary.

Mobster kingpin Johnny Marcone has been kidnapped by those in the supernatural world and Mab wants him found. And everyone is taking sides which causes danger for Harry and the friends he enlists to aid him. Denizens of the Summer Court attack, the Order of the Blackened Denarias want the Archive and so much more.

Harry enlists the Knights of the Cross, Murphy, Thomas, Molly and Kincaid to aid him. He also gains help from a talking skull whom I happen to love. Humor, tests of friendship and more await you! While the threads are action packed, I also felt like Butcher was using this as a bridge book. It will test Harry’s friendship with Michael as Molly matures.

While the story is far from perfect and a time or two, I needed to re-listen to a section to keep up there is no doubt Butcher is a tremendous storyteller. Together with Marsters are narrator they weave magic. I lost track of time, laughed aloud and simple enjoy!

almost perfect

There are a couple of sections missing still. One would think someone would have done something about it by now.

Missing audio

Yet another book with damaged audio. The proportion of Audible books like this is unacceptable.

Good, but the audible version has a problem

in the middle of chapter 13, there is a gap of a few minutes cut out in a jarring way that is obviously an error. I hope it is only my version that had this. Obviously the rest of the book is wonderful and would be perfect except for this
