"Buckell delivers double helpings of action and violence in a plot-driven story worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster." (Publishers Weekly)
"Sly Mongoose combines weird and wonderful tech and human cultures of fantastic diversity with some of the coolest planet-building this side of Hal Clement. (Elizabeth Bear)
I listened to this book over the course of 2 days of travel. With a 10 hour car ride each way I needed something to keep me awake and keep my mind occupied. This book did the trick. I enjoyed it and I really like the narrator. With his voice, the book had a little bit of the same feel as the "Altered Carbon" book this same narrator reads. This is worth a credit.
I really enjoyed this story. I was filled with flawed people doing the best they can in a chaotic and overwhelming universe. The main character's actions have consequences which they continually have to deal with.
I would recommend this story to anyone who likes a well written space opera.
While there are a few interesting ideas, a great narrator, and the occasional entertaining action scene, this book is simply very poorly written. Don't be deceived by the high average rating: this is off the supermarket shelf fiction.
The last couple of hours or so of the book are by far the most interesting and actually have some thought provoking moments, but in order to get there you need to get through hours of dull, mediocre writing, poor pacing, and thin characters. It's not worth the time or the credit.
This is a fantastic little gem! I found the book on a top list of 2008 SF and I'm glad I did. How can you go wrong with networked space zombies? You can't I tell ya. Great reading all the way through.
