Publisher's summary

It’s Christmas again at St Mary's and time for Max’s obligatory illegal jump. On this occasion, however, they’re right up against it.

A loaded gun has been left behind in Ancient Egypt, and it’s up to them to retrieve it before anyone accidentally blows their own head off, thus affecting the timeline for centuries to come.

And as if that’s not enough, someone (Max) has inadvertently poisoned Mr Markham. It’s hot, they’re running out of supplies, they can’t find the gun and it’s all going horribly wrong. Again.

Great short story

I wasn't necessarily drawn back to the story and aching to listen more, but yet I really enjoyed it. I think that I didn't really have time to get to know the characters and appreciate the crisis in the short time it took to tell the story. It always takes a while to really care about the outcome in a given story. But, this story had a fascinating premise and made me want to read larger works about St Mary's and the historians working there. I really think you'll enjoy it as well.

Very Enjoyable Short Story

This was a very enjoyable short story featuring Max and the regular crew. I actually enjoy the author's short stories about St. Mary's as much or maybe more than the full novels. This one is worth the read for St. Mary's fans.

Cute!!

This is a cute short story narrated by Zara Ramm. She is a really wonderful narrator and could listen to her all day! The story is typical St. Mary's craziness. Glad the series isn't over yet!!

Christmas stories

Along with the annual Doctor Who Xmas story, I now have another Xmas tradition to look forward to. Nothing like a little end of the world in our example form or another disaster romp.

"Absolute happiness"

The third book in the series that I've read and although it is a free short story it is by far the best. Just plain fun! The plot is cohesive, the writing is decisive and it's free... you can't get any better than that. Thank you for this very pleasant Christmas gift 😄

A Short Christmas Jump to Ancient Egypt

What made the experience of listening to Ships and Stings and Wedding Rings the most enjoyable?

The performance of Zara Ramm. An excellent fit.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Max is our POV character and naturally is the most relatable.

What does Zara Ramm bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her performance fits the series mood perfectly

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The story lends itself toward laughter for the most part. The funniest character in the story is a toss up between Max and Markham.

Any additional comments?

You should be aware that this story to take place just AFTER Book 6 in the series as there is a rather important spoiler mentioned here that may lessen your enjoyment of that book if you listen to this one first.

A trio of presents from St. Marys

The Chronicles of St. Mary’s is Jodi Taylor’s madcap series about a set of time traveling British historians. A few months ago I read Just one damned thing after another which is the first in the series. Audible offered several short Christmas stories in the same series as freebies. So, I snatched them up and put them away as a present to myself for this holiday season. Here is one review of all three stories:

You should listen to Christmas Present first as it sets up the next story. Max, Peterson and Markham set out to rescue two historians on the 10th anniversary of their disappearance. In shades of It’s a Wonderful Life, Mrs Paterson (aka Clio, the Muse of History) presents Max with a vision that sets in motion this Christmas Eve adventure.

Ships & Stings & Wedding Rings is next up. It has been one year since Max and her team rescued Elspeth Gray. Both women are about to reminded that actions have consequences and you can’t always get want (but sometimes you get what you need). The sweet ending with Max and Leon reminded me of O. Henry’s The Gift of The Magi.

Finally we have When a Child Is Born. As Clio played a role in the earlier story, History itself does so here. For those unfamiliar with the St. Mary Chronicles, history is a sentient entity who can stop interference by the time traveling historians. In this case, however, History itself steers Max and her crew to ensure a particular outcome. Enlightening as well as entertaining.

These three are well worth acquiring and jump starting you into the season. Happy Holidays!
