Publisher's Summary

The New York Times best-selling author of The Lost Fleet returns to the "strong saga" of a rebellion against a totalitarian regime and the determination of two people to create a better future in the farthest reaches of the colonized galaxy....

The Syndicate Worlds continue to splinter as more star systems pledge allegiance to President Gwen Iceni, General Artur Drakon, and the new government they're establishing at Midway. But the toxic legacy of Syndicate rule continues to undermine their efforts as the rebels encounter difficulty trusting one another and believing their new leaders' promises of freedom from tyranny. Before Iceni and Drakon can put their house in order, they must deal with an even greater threat. An enigma warship has appeared and vanished near a Syndic colony. If the aliens are capable of jumping into other human-occupied star systems, then billions of people could be vulnerable to a hostile invasion fleet anywhere they choose to strike. But an even greater vulnerability lies with Iceni and Drakon, as a once-trusted adviser-turned-saboteur plans revenge....

    "Gripping"

I think this is the last book in the Lost Star series. I hate to think this is the end. Between the Lost Fleet series and the Lost Star series the characters have absorbed me into their world and I do not want to leave them. The books in the series must be read in order to fully understand the story line.

Midway Star system is facing multiple threats not only from the Syndicate Worlds but from a female pirate who has taken over three neighboring worlds and hates Gwen Iceni, and from a former Syndicate CEO who was a POW that Iceni has released and sent to a neighboring star system. But the greatest of all is the return of the “Enigma”.

Campbell continues to introduce new characters to the story. Needless to say, the book is well written. I just could not put the book down so read it in one sitting. Campbell has provided the reader with a number of exciting space battles and one ground battle. Campbell is a master in writing space battles. In this book we now have some romance between two couples; I am not going to reveal the details. Campbell steadily ties all the various strands of the story and brings them all together at the end of the book, but I still want more. Marc Vietor has done an excellent job narrating this series.

"Aliens, Allies and Pirates. Oh my."

The road to hell is paved in good intentions and the Red Wedding of The Lost Stars is accepting RSVPs.

This was such an emotional roller coaster. Taken with the last Lost Fleet book I find myself pondering if Mr. Hemry was in an accident and was provided a blood transfusion from George RR Martin.

As always Mr. Hemry (AKA Jack Campbell) writes a brilliant tale. The Enigma Race push into former Syndic space in a move that aims to carve through the newly emerging Phoenix Stars. The Syndics cannot let Midway go. It also cannot let them build a palatable alternative to themselves.

The machinations of friends work to their own dark goals and slowly their efforts see the light of day.

And a Pirate from Gwen's shameful past.

    Brilliantly executed. Engrossing. Well narrated.

    Can I have some more?

    "Jack Campbel you entrance me."

Though I do love this author I tend to get to the end his books and think:

"What the hell even really happened?"

The development of the characters on an internal level is always glacier.

He gives you just enough not to put down the book, but never enough to really satisfy.

The external story though, the worlds he builds, is phenomenal.

In that I cannot fault him.

    An excellent read.

"Only for Fans of the Franchise..."

Almost gave the story a 2* review because of certain choices Campbell made with longstanding characters and the contrived feeling of one of the story arcs. If you like this series and universe, you'll enjoy the story and want to read the next one. If you have never picked up a Lost Fleet book put this one back and start at the beginning.

Very disappointing ending. He got rid of the most intriguing elements of the series in an offhand way.
